I go into the Application manager, click "Check for Updates". In the list that is returned is "Operating System". I select that and hit "update" then I get a message "Unable to install. Software contains updates to packages installed from a different source and is likely to harm the system. Contact software author. Continue installing?"

Matter of fact, the above message is displayed for all of the items in the Check for Updates list: map, makedev, libglade2-0. Should I hit that "Continue installing?" button?

Even if you click "Continue" it won't install them. The only way to install those updates is to enter Red Pill Mode and try again. As for whether or not you should, I couldn't tell you. I did it on mine and haven't had any problems.

Why did you turn on Red Pill mode? The Operating System update is a good way to make your device unbootable (hint, there are several threads on the subject, try a search .

I haven't had any problems since I installed the update several months ago.

Then you're lucky.

It's a misnamed update not intended for use by anybody, so please don't install it.

You're right, I've probably been lucky. I didn't mean to sound like I was recommending it, though. It's probably best to follow GeneralAntilles' advice and play it safe. I'm just one of those people who sees a big red button labeled "Warning: Do Not Push!" and just has to push it.
