So I am feeling nostalgic and weighing my options on a new toy this week.

I am wondering, now that we have many months w/ the n810 under our belts, if people feel it is that much of an improvement over the n800?

To clarify...

Is it worth twice the price?

Some do, some don't.
I don't, but then I don't have any experience with one myself...

A friend has a n810, i have n800. He keeps using the on screen keyboard because in his opinion it's easier to type on and he keeps complaining about the d-pad position or having to slide out the keyboard for many things. He's also using an external gps unit, since the build in one is not good enough.

So to keep the story short, he really regrets he had not bought a N800 before they sold out everywhere. In my opinion it's a personal thing, some people prefer the hardware keyboard, some don't. For some the internal gps unit is good enough, for some not. IMHO, the N800 had a better value for it's price and i don't see why someone would really need to upgrade from N800 to N810.

I had used the N800 for just under a year before switching to the N810.

My vote is NO. It should be priced around $299 normally with sales bringing it down to around $250 or so.

I like the fact that the N810 is smaller, has a keyboard, and is sunlight readable (transflective screen). As for the N810's thinness and GPS... doesn't really add much. Now some people say that they are fine with the onscreen keyboard (and having the screen completely obstructed whenever they want to type something or enter a text prompt) and that they can use a screen protector that gives them the transflective screen feel. To each his own I guess. I love my N810 and do not regret selling my N800 to get it. I still think it was/is a little pricey, but I was willing to pay the difference. The good thing about the N810 is that because it is smaller you can use really good cases for other devices such as the sidekick and others.

Overall, no regrets. Just wish the tablet had a PIM. I should make a signature with that line in it.

It's got a hw keyboard, far nicer to use imho.
The other things are mere bonuses.

It won't come from Nokia (as their PIM phones are some other series and they don't want to canabalise sales). What's wrong with GPE/Pimlico? Talk to their developers, etc.

not one regret. too bad I can't say the same for my oqo 01+

my only regret is that I didn't find out about these tablets until the n810, but even if I would have had a n800 I would have upgraded since it takes me forever to type on screen.

For me the device is a complete waste of time and cash so far.

1st (and most important to me)
It must have a calendar (not even a complete PIM - but at least a calendar!) that supports:
-> Categories
-> Category colors must be shown at least in monthly and weekly view
-> The calendar must be instalable on the internal (built in) memory

2nd
GPS as a navigation sys for the car is COMPLETLY useless the way u get the device.
-> There is no application available that supports routing.
-> I personally need - at least - all available maps from europe. If you purchase them from Wayfinder - it's not only limited to 12months - futhermore the EXTRAORDINARY price only includes either western or eastern europe. Just go to ANY e-shop and u get a better, way (!!) faster GPS navi including EVERY available map in europe - without this time limit for LESS cash.

It's slow, there is no way (so far) it supports jre (java runtime environment).

As this is the THIRD (u must think of this the T H I R D ! !) generation of the tablett, i have not much hope any of those points get fixed anywhere soon.

Video viewing is incredible unplesant. It jolts - it stops, it worx for seconds.... BTW - i tried several videos that are plying just fine on my old Archos PMA 430 - wich has a slightly slower hardware... (and a way worse screen resolution :-))


If i want something for surfing the web - get some umpc with some propper linux. Or even an archos (was & unfortunatley still is my actual calendar).
This maemo think is not helpful - or better said: As comfortable as linux was 10years ago - and i mean 10 years ago - cause that was when i tried the first time & it was the same disaster like maemo is today:
Only minimal stuff is working
U need the commandline - if u don't wanna stick with the very few aps provided offically by nokia & maemo. That wouldn't be such a problem (I run linux as my only system for years now) - if it wasn't a commandline without SU rights.
OF COURSE u may just install packages from sources all over this world... well that leaves you with a system vulnerability of a win95 without updates (if the source owner wants to harm you/read EVERYTHING u do - it's no problem for him/her).

Well ... i try to keep it short...
-> No category colores are shown (what is a killerargument for me)
-> It's not at all customizeable:
--> Weekly view - take it as it is or leave it
--> Colores - cant be changed (background is yellow+red for weekends)
-> Doesn't show end time of events - especially nasty if they last longer than midnight. So if i look at the calendar the first entry of the day shows on top - without time - only in weekly view though. In monthly view events lasting longer than midnight are shwon AFTER the recent events of the day
--> Minor bugs i.e. switching to full screen in monthly view shows wired letters instead of the days on top. Not realy a problem though, as this vanishes as soon as u switch to any other view (weekly..) and back.

I bought the dev. for two main reasons:
-> Replacement for my Archos PMA - which i mainly used as my Calendar. As the Nokia is also Linux based, i thought it would be a snap to get my favourite calendar running - the Kde calendar
-> Replacement of my Navi

For 5 months now i end up with 3 devices... Not that it has any use to carry around the N810 thing - but i still hope to figure out how to get KDE PIM (or calendar) running (internal!) or how to fix the color support of GPE suite.

One very good thing for me (yes there is one :-)) is the possibility to have maps from all over the wordl - even where there aint no normal Navigation (with routing) available - it's at least possible to get my position on a map.

PS:
I don't think a GOOD working PIM would harm Nokia's cell phone market. The PIMs available on mobiles aint usable if you realy need a calendar.
Well - not true - better let's say:
If you have an "ordinary life" (whatever that might be...) having one single job with the same working hour times & the only thing you need a calendar for is not to forget an appointment with your friend - well THEN even the slimest cellular calendar is sufficent :-)

The Palm applications don't include a good calendar?
