Hello, Newbie here, just wanted to say hello since I just registered. I am a 21 year old civil engineer student from Chile. Looking to get into computers as I advance. I got my N800 a couple of weeks ago, and I love it. Oh, so I wanna know more about the comunitty too. How many girls around? Being a bit of a geekgirl I usually am a bit surrounded by guys when it comes to computers, so i would like to check the ratio here ^^
Well I am just learning about the tablet but if I can help with anything I'll try my best!
Greetings
PS Any vegetarians? <--- we vegetariangeeks are a rare species u know...

Apparently, even "others" outnumber females here, so sorry, but we've no surprisingly large female geek contingent.

Any vegetarians?
I believe both Hedgecore and Scarflash have mentioned being vegetarians. I expect others are as well, but there hasn't been much discussion of the topic.

So, at least 8. In the computer department of my university, the usual generation is 2 girls vs 200 guys, right now i am doing basic engineering courses, and in a year from now i'll hopefully be entering there, so i better get used now ^^ . In the basic courses girls ammount for maybe 20% tops of the total. The math/computers world looks kinda hostile for most girls, i guess. Never my case, though. My parents were visionary enough to get a DOS machine for me and my sisters when i was about three . Been spending time behind a screen ever since, mostly windows, though. Would like to learn linux, but windows works for me, so i'm not likely to do a total switch anytime soon. Greetings

welcome to the forums! Like you, I just signed up this month. Pretty much everything about the N800 has been answered here, for us newbies, the search button is our best friend

i got my n800 optimized the way i want it within a week, and that includes putting screen rotation, optimizing the browser, using the terminal and the built in VIM, and installing a myriad of useful apps (some of which aren't found on the maemo official page) all thanks to the friendly community! hope you enjoy your stay!

Thanks, i have been checking the forums for a while before registering so i've seen some of the amazing stuff they do here. And my tablet got filled rather fast from all the apps i've put in it. I would like to learn python to make simple apps, have done a little java before but i have gotten rusty, so any help on where to learn to program towards the IT would be great.

Hej hej & welcome!

As far as I know both Python and Java are not *officially* supported by Nokia, but of course available for the Internet Tablet platform. See http://pymaemo.garage.maemo.org/ and https://wiki.evolvis.org/jalimo/index.php/Maemo .

Weirdly, they're actually both officially supported on Nokia phones (see the Forum Nokia site), but not on Nokia tablets. No idea why. :-)

Welcome aboard; stereotypical omnivorous male geek here, I'm afraid.

And thanks for pointing out that poll, sjgadsby. Just voted. It should be stickied so everyone sees it, and we could get a larger sample, but I'd bet it's about right.
