Well, that's about it really. I'm reviving my 770, mostly in view of a possible september attendance, so I tried to install mplayer via the maemo.org one-click install.

After disabling a bunch of disappeared repositories (soemthing that has become sort of a routine for all things maemo), I finally got AppMangler to refresh, but mplayer, the 2006 version, won't install. It complains it's missing "hildon-fm1 >=0.29-1", something I connot find (red pill mode gives the old AppMangler bug where the application names are invisible. Woohoo!).

Now, before people start, I'm not in the least interested in installing any of the HE versions. This 770 runs ITOS 1.2006.26-8 and it will keep running that. It's the only ITOS where I have a permanent bluetooth icon in the status bar, so suggestions like: "Why don't you update to HE-whatever?" will be cast into the darkness. After all, there is a 2006 mplayer listed.

Hmm... version 0.29-1 is for Gregale, which isn't really OS2006, is it? That version would be 1.14-1 I think. Looks like the mplayer isn't really build for OS2006 proper (?). In any case you could try to either download and install hildon-fm1 from http://repository.maemo.org/pool/gre...29-1_armel.deb
or possibly add
http://repository.maemo.org
gregale
free
to your repository list. Or maybe there's another mplayer for OS2006 as well. But as the date of that hildon-fm1 in the link is actually 2006 it just might work..

Karel let me know is this works, I have been trying to install mplayer on my 770 as well but I have the same problem. I even have the above repo, but when I tell it to install hildon-fm1 it tells me I need libossomime0 (>= 1.4.17) and I have no clue where to get this install, I tried once and it FUBARed everything (always read apt-get messages before saying yes)

That version of libossomime0 is supposed to be available in the same gregale repository (and also in mistral and scirocco).
Or try this direct link for download: http://repository.maemo.org/pool/mae...17-1_armel.deb

TA-t3 thanks for the help, but a no go. In the interest of full disclosure, I am running the 2008HE and it is the problem.
I just figured out that libossomine0 was replaced by libhildonmine0 and this is the problem all of the versions of hildon-fm1 I have found require libossomime0 but I can not install it since my OS uses libhildonmime0.
Is there a mplayer that does not need stuff I can not install on 08he?

There were 3 releases of OS2006: mistral, scirocco and gregale. One-click install file supports gregale because that is what most 770 users supposedly should be running among all OS2006 variants. Does anybody have a good suggestion about how to support all the OS2006 flavours, preferably without investing significant efforts into it?

You still can use application manager to install software, just make sure that you are using repositories compatible with your firmware. For example, mplayer is still available in mistral extras repository, but it is frozen at mplayer_1.0rc1-maemo.18 version: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...ree/m/mplayer/

Now, before people start, I'm not in the least interested in installing any of the HE versions.
HE versions would not help here as mplayer is not packaged for HE versions on 770, only the latest OS2006 release is supported.

Might it be a good idea to investigate this bluetooth issue to check if it is fixable in the latest OS2006 release?

Thanks a zillion, Serge! The most recent version from that repository installed smoothly and plays actually almost better than the one on my N800.

I have no intention of upgrading my trusted old 770 because "It Just Works" <TM>. I don't do complicated things with it, merely reading books and -- now again, thanks to you -- watching old videoclips. I've encoded a few oldies movies (12 Angry Men, Stalag 17, Maltese Falcon -- you get the idea) on it, they don't take up huge amounts of space, as even low bitrates give more than acceptable results.

Now to find some old jazz and my retro machine is complete. If I could find a way to put analog bakelyte knobs on it and maybe give the screen a bulge and some flicker, it would so be a fifties steampunk analog. (in fact, the "pearly" backlight of the 770's screen is a bit retro in its own right)

Listen to Serge; he knows what he's talking about. The version labeled "18" in his repository installed without any problem. It plays a 400x240 movie (512 kbps) without any noticeable artifacts.

It turns out the so-called "one click install" really means "one click if you're running the latest version of the OS labeled green and we can't be bothered to check properly". Mplayer is built for every version of 2006, but maemo.org sure ain't gonna help you.

Serge's link to the Mistral repositories works. I just downloaded it to my memory card, installed it and badda-bing, badda-boom! mplayer.
