I got all set to move from Chinook to Diablo, downloaded the latest image, and did the following.

1. Plugged in the Internet Tablet (N800) but turned it off.

2. Typed from the same Linux subdirectory
./flasher-3.0 RX-34_DIABLO_4.2008.23-14_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

I got the message that
Suitable USB device not found, waiting

then turned it on, holding the Home key

USB device found found at bus 003, device address 021
Found device RX-34, hardware revision 1301
NOLO version 1.1.7
Version of 'sw-release': <no version>

Then the root prompt. Then -- nothing. It sat for quite awhile, apparently doing nothing at all, with the USB icon in the upper right corner. I checked that the Flasher 3.0 is set to execute. I tried the whole thing again in root.

Any advice?

Yes, use the correct flasher command.

Code:
./flasher-3.0 -F RX-34_DIABLO_4.2008.23-14_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R

Yep, that's it. Sheesh. Thanks, GeneralAntilles. I was thinking I had a bad download.

Follow-up. I'm restoring various applications, and mytube keeps failing. When I drop to root to try apt-get install mytube, I get some interesting error messages:

osso-software-version-rx34: Depends: flash-and-reboot (=3) but it is not going to be installed

Depends: initfs-flasher (=0.95.16.-200823maemo2) but it is not going to be installed

Depends: kernel-diablo-flasher (=2.6.21-200823maemo3) but it is not going to be installed.

So I'm wondering: was the flash method I used sufficient to bring everything up to date? (And that method was the single flasher command above.)

Please remember to google any errors messages that come up. This issue has been covered many times.
