The LCD on my N800 has developed a problem that seems to be going from bad to worse. This started happening after I downloaded the latest OS upgrade. Initially the problem was that when I leave the device on for a few minutes, and the LCD has turned off , tapping on the screen would not bring it back to life. Instead the LCD would slowly flash as if it were desperately trying to light up, but not able to. I can still hear the device working, including starting programs based on where I tap on the screen . But there is no display.

I have tried taking the battery out and replacing it. And most recently I have also re-flashed it with the prior version of Diablo. Now the most recent problem is that, when I switch on the device, the screen does not come on. There is no screen with 'NOKIA' in blue lettering - all I see is the screen flashing like I explained above. The device boots, since I can hear the bootup tone, and also on tapping the screen, I can hear it launching programs. But still no display.

Any clues on what kind of problem I might be looking at here ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Sounds like a hardware problem. Is it still under warranty? then send it to repair. If it's not, then you'll have to open it and see if there is anything loose or burnt.

It is still under warranty. I just got it in January . I suppose sending it back to Nokia is the best way out. It is just that it started doing this after I did the latest OS upgrade, and I was hoping that this was a software issue. Also the problem is very intermittent. Sometimes I will plug in the charger, and the Nokia screen would come right on. At other times it would not. When the screen does come on, the tablet functions without any problems. The screen stays on as long as I do not allow it to dim again. Once I leave it long enough to turn off, it does not come back on.

Anyway - thanks for your response - it is going back I guess

Make sure you don't have autolock enabled.
But from other symptoms it looks like a HW problem.

I'm not aware of any HW bug for n8x0, so this could just be a faulty component, especially since the unit is relatively new.

It is not the autolock - autolock is disabled.

Well, in one of those chances where I was lucky to get the screen back, I installed ssh , and managed to capture the messages from dmesg when the screen goes through the process of desperately trying to come back to life

Below is the output - The multiple "performing LCD ESD recovery" are the attempts, and they are accompanied by a 'glowing' LCD . When that line stops, means the LCD has given up - and another sequence starts when I touch the screen again.

Does this output throw any light on the problem ?
