I am considering an N810 one of the main reasons is a mobile mapper as a phone screen is too small.
But I cannot get information on how it works.
My questions are:
- Does it support external GPS (I have Qstarz Pt1000) ?
- Can I use JPG map images ?
- How should I calibrate the maps ?
- What format for waypoints / tracks / routes is used ?

Thanks

Yes, the N810 supports external bluetooth GPS receivers, but it has its own internal receiver. It downloads maps from various repositories, including Virtual Earth, Open Street, and Google. There is no calibration required. You just download a route using addresses or lat/lon, choose the map format and zoom levels you want, and download it. It cannot route without an internet connection, because the maps are raster, not vector, based. You can get plain maps, satellite photos, or hybrids, at least from most repositories. The help file is very complete and actually helpful.

I wouldn't suggest buying an N810 just for mapping, because you can get a standalone mapping GPS with full routing for <$150. Maemo Mapper is not a robust mapping program. Only buy the N810 if you want a toy for other things.

No not only form mapping, I want to use it for mobile internet browsing (as phone screens are too small and phone browsers have no flash support. And further just for fun as a toy....
I want to use the mapping part not only for routing but also for using preloaded raster maps to see where I am without an internet connection (e.g. in remote locations) like Oziexplorer.
Is that possible ?

Yes, that's what MM does. You can download maps in advance, and with a GPS you can see your position on the map, and if you download routes in advance (or have an active internet connection, get them anytime) you can get voice directions as you drive them. As I said, I like the satellite photos, or hybrid maps which overlay road names on photos, for this.

MM worked very well for me as a navigation device in Africa, where I couldn't buy any useful maps and my TomTom Navigation system was useless (no maps there either).
I wrote a bit about that inside this posting in the 'what do you use your tablet for' thread on TabletScene. http://www.tabletscene.com/forums/sh...6&postcount=19

You can watch your GPS location moving down the freeway as you drive, even without an Internet connection; you can check your speed and location on a cruise ship, also without an Internet connection -- MM is a great toy.

Mine will tell me my lat/long, but it doesn't display any maps.

Go into the menu, select Maps, tick 'Auto-Download'. You may want to enter Manage Repositories first and add some more (there's a Download button there). It should come pre-installed with Openstreetmaps though. Get on the network and watch MM show you maps.
