It is much easier to install the application from the application manager directly.

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/stardict/

Instructions on where to copy the dictionaries (oxford etc) are also described in the above web page.

PS: if you are look for the newer 3.00, I would recommend to stick with the proven 2.48 (above). The 3.00 has 'hanging' problem with dictionaries caching, and it is not hildonized.

Thanks. I downloaded Stardict through Application Manager (got the 2.4.8 version)
and stored the file (oxford dict) stardict-oald-2.4.2 in
removable memory card/stardict/dic. Is this correct? I'm not sure I really
understand the content of the link you gave. What's next? Do I have to
un-pack the stardict-oald-2.4.2 file? How do I do this? I tried to download
bzip2, but cannot figure out how to use it. I suppose I need to give a few
commands at the XTerminal, could you please give me a list of such
commands, including anything that it needed to get stardict work. So if
you could me a step-by-step guide it'd really be great. I've been looking
out for one but keep coming across technical language I don't understand...
thanks for your help!

What I did was connect the n800 to my pc and untar the dictionary files there using 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org). You have to put the files in a 'stardict' folder and a subfolder 'dic' on your removable memory. It won't work if you've created the folders on the nokia's internal memory. Hope this helps!

I'm using StarDict on Linux Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop no problem. I'm not sure about using 7-zip on Linux...I tried to copy & paste the file "stardict-oald-2.4.2.tar.bz2" (untarred) from my laptop to my Nokia N800 > removable memory/stardict/dic, but stardict still tells me that "no dictionoaries are loaded".

When I installed the above StarDict dictionary on my laptop, I untarred it through the command (on terminal)

~$ tar -xjvf stardict-oald-2.4.2.tar.bz2

then I created a specific directory by

sudo mkdir /usr/share/stardict/dic

and finally moved the untarred file there:

sudo mv /home/XXXXXXX/stardict-oald-2.4.2/ /usr/share/stardict/dic/

Can I make use of a similar procedure on my Nokia N800 to FINALLY be able to use StarDict? Alternatively?

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, you can do almost the same.

1. download bzip2
2. bunzip2 <file>
3. tar xvf <file.tar>
4. mv /home/XXXXXXX/stardict-oald-2.4.2/ /usr/share/stardict/dic/

I have the same problem, and thanks a lot for your direction. But one more question, I can not copy the folder to the target /usr/share/stardict/dic/. I check the attribute of that, which is drwxr-xr-x 2 root root. How could I do now?

I used the folder underneath, and it works. Thanks.

* /media/mmc1/stardict/dic
* /media/mmc2/stardict/dic (N800 only)
* /usr/share/stardict/dic
* ~/.stardict/dic

Help, I have trouble now. What I used is N810 and I did what I posted before. Everything is fine before I power it off when it almost out of power, and the stardict does work after I boot up my N810 again. One more thing I did before that is I copied three more dictionaries into the same folder unziped in windows Vista. And I tried the dictionary worked well.

I tried uninstalled and reinstall it and does not work.
