I've posted this in the "competitors" section, but i still can't make up my mind.. I'm looking for a device to replace my laptop for Light Word processing, spreadsheet editing, emailing and internet browsing..

Where i live there are numerous N810's to be found(bestbuy mobile, craigslist etc).
But online I've also come across these "MIDs" and "UMPC's" that look promising.

To this point, I have used my hacked PSP, tethered via wifi to my cell for net browsing, movies and creating/editing notes(or cell for ms office). However, the lack of touch screen on the psp has me moving finally moving on.

I've also been researching the heck out of this thing, but cant come up with a conclusive comprehension of this tablets capabilities (keeping hearing about diablo, denbian, maemo, os2008. without fully understanding what they are.. OS's? and what functions they serve)

The device im in need of, will be used daily for:

Internet(flash, java).
Movies(divx, xvid, etc.)
Document editing
IM
Emailing

So i'm hoping you all can help me decide if this tablet is for me.

All you mentioned can be easily done on the tablet, even if some tasks might be slow, and need some adaptation from your part.
The Pandora, when available,could be good also, and since it should have twice the memory and a more powerful processor, should be significantly quicker.

Debian is a Linux OS, Maemo is the linux based OS that the n8*0 use. OS2008 is the newest updates for Maemo, diablo is the codename used for the os2008 release (as opposed to chinook which corresponded to OS2007.

the tablet's internet browsing is pretty good with flash and java support, Abiword and Openoffice (via easydebian) can edit documents, pidgin is a good IM client, and claws mail or the built in modest is good for emailing

As long as you re-encode the videos, or use videos encoded for the PSP already, you'll be fine with movies. However, if you're not wanting to reencode videos, you may be disappointed by the N8x0's video playback capability. There are threads discussing the optimal video format for the N8x0 devices on these forums.

nokia has a program for video conversion..it's actually pretty quick. a movie can be converted in just a few minutes!

Seems the Tablet will pretty much do what my phone+psp has been doing with similar prepwork-which i actually love.

& Wazd the psp is definitely a handy device once "unlocked", the only real drawback is the lack of touch screen, which in turn makes you have to use an on-screen keyboard & analog stick =/

I've pretty much whittled my choice down to the N810 Wimax, and a device i saw in the "competitors" section called a "BenQ S6". The 810 may win by default though, as i've never purchased anything from another country that wasn't on eBay.

Provided you have the ability to tether to a cell phone at a reasonable cost, the N810 should be right up your alley. Go to www.maemo.org and check out the apps available. There are probably more than a few that should help sway your decision.

I don't use mine at all anymore, tethering in Canada is like winning the reverse lottery (you pay them $10,000 a month) and I drank the kool-aid and got an iPhone which does the trick for me.

Yeah, it's cost free for all intents and purposes(tied into the monthly cell data plan cost & undetectable via regedit).
I personally love the slick look and smoothness of the iphone, if i wasn't with Sprint, i would likely pick one up, as the ipod touch isnt suitable for me as a second device(small screen).. and none of their current phones have screens large enough to fit my "all-in-one" tastes either :-(

you mentioned editing documents and spreadsheets. I think this will be kind of hard on the n810, but maybe there is something out there. You can get debian on it and go with openoffice apps, but that is big stuff, especially if you weren't even sure what debian was and those office apps will run fairly slow. For browsing though I think it is the best device of that size.
