He might have been talking about maemo mapper which he has worked with more and its default is to store it's files on the internal flash.
His concept still stands in that you need to direct many of the programs to save their files on the SD cards instead of the internal flash and it will save space for programs.

Can I install the OS on the internal memory (2GB) or an external microSD (with miniSD adapter)?
Any solutions?
I did a search but didn't find the solutions, sorry if it has been posted.
