Hi all,
maybe it has been allready discussed somewhere but searching with sdcard and rotation keywords didn't gave any usefull result
so I need : a boot from sdcard (internal slot) and a screen rotation
I managed to boot from sdcard (basically the script just create a kernel image with an initramfs that allow choose root device and flash all on the n800 boot partition)
when I want to activate rotation, the tutorial says to flash again the device so the previous kernel with initramfs that allow to boot from sdcard will be... overwritten.... so I can't have both at the same time...
  1. isn't it possible to use the boot partition of n800 to store a real bootloader like lilo or grub?
  2. if not why don't provide a kernel + initramfs that will do a kexec to the /boot/kernel of the root device (then allowing to update the kernel without flashing, just put a new image and boot!)
  3. how can I both sdcard boot and rotation support?
thanks and regards,
JLM

yes I allready read both of those....
just for your information both require to flash your n800.... both will flash with different kernel and initramfs, then when you activate rotation you loose boot from sdcard, and when you activate boot from sdcard you loos rotation.... endless loop

The only things you need for rotation are kernel and X.

There is no initramfs as a part of kernel so boot from SD is not directly related to kernel. For bootmenu you reflash jffs2 partiton called initfs. These are two separate matters.

I'm with JLM -- I want no ambiguity before altering my system this way. (Or: these ways.)

Three more-experienced users indicate there is no conflict between these two goals.

But when I read the two wiki pages it's not at all clear to me if I need to do one procedure before the other, or make any changes in one of them to account for the other.

If not, could someone just say, "Do [ rotation | flash-card-boot] first, then do the other."

If some step needs to be changed or omitted if you're doing both, could that be pointed out?

I know that I would appreciate such specificity.

Thanks,
Roger

I'm pretty sure just about everyone in this thread has more Linux knowledge than I, but...

Here is my layman's understanding:

Rotation == Kernel
Dual Booting == initfs

Rotation <==> Dual Booting.

So, do them in whatever order you like, I don't think they effect each other. I would try Dual Booting first then Rotation, though.

ok so I'm trying it, since I already have a sdcard boot n800.... I'm just trying the rotate tutorial

I get the following error
couldn't find package osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked

I ignored and tried to go further (yes I know this is bad to ignore errors but well.... who never try never knows)

then I get the error :
kernel-diablo-flasher depend on flash-and-reboot
package flash-and-reboot is not installed
xserver-xomap depend on libhall (>=0.5.10); however version of libhall on system is 0.5.10~git20071003-lossol

any idea?
thanks
JLM

There's no indication of their relationship because there is no relationship. :\
