My n810 is about 16month old and the touch screen is failing:
1) My n810 has screen creep in that the touch screen is not accurate at the top of the touch screen, it is so bad that the calibration utility doesn't register the touch (not the mention the calibration utility doesn't work well at all). It changes from day to day.
2) Some time the touch screen doesn't work at all - I apply pressure behind the screen (cant replicate the action) and some time the touch screen comes back. (its suffered a bit of abuse having 2 toddlers)

All in all my n810 has had a good life being an indispensable PMP on those 20 hour flight, a good diner table encyclopedia, a great RDP /SSH login tool, not to mention an emergency baby sitter from time to time, and commuting with out podcasts via Canola2 Media Player RSS downloads is sourly missed. (and I love the fact it hardly uses any power i.e. it is way more efficient than turning on my PC)

In the wake of the impending doom, I have installed Open ssh and found it to be a bit slow, I have now installed Dropbear SSH server and x11vnc server to gain access to the unit should the unreliable screen fail.

One solution I have for the device is:
I am running SSH - WOL on my DD-WRT router in my office, and it works great. So good in fact I am a total convert. (Please bear in mind I am not a coder I can copy code and change code to suite, - but the last time I edited a computer command was to optimize my autoexe.bat file to play Doom on my 386. I have 15 year old rudimentary DOS experience when it comes to a command prompt. ie my n810 is my intro into Linux and i am way impressed so fare.)

Dropbear SSH tunnel works well on my n810, however I need the WOL functionality. Dropbear SSH server for the n810 doesn't seem to have WOL installed. Or at least it doesn't work with the following command line customized for my PC and network.
"/usr/sbin/wol -i 192.168.1.255 AA:BB:CCD:EE:FF"

My questions are
1) How can I install WOL functionality on my n810 to work through SSH?
2) What can I do with an N810 without a touch screen?
3) Is there any advantage to installing another OS like Ubuntu?
(keep in mind I would probity need an installer)

Thanks,
Tim

Well, you could tether a keyboard / mouse over bluetooth

(Or get a USB female A to female A adapter and use the device's USB port as a host port. Same effect).

Personally, I intend to install Debian on my N810 when it reaches end of life and use it as a super low power server (probably an Apache server)... or maybe to control an anti-racoon sentry gun.

I'm guessing sending it to Nokia to get it fixed/replaced isn't an option since it's 16 months old?

Ok, TECHNICALLY the N810 will work ok if the keyboard still works. Also, bluetooth mice and USB mice do work. Most things will be much harder, but...

Also, for WOL, what do you mean? Currently I am using a python script to turn on my computer every time it detects my routers WiFi signal. This is not through SSH (I have no idea how that would work), but rather just sends a magic packet to a MAC address in the local network. Is that what you want?

TimWatt of Vancouver:
If you have tried everything to fix your touch screen. Then you have probably tried running a business card around between the screen and front panel of your N810. This trick usually frees pieces of cookies that may have been lodged when toddlers play with the Nokia. This has worked well with every touch screen that I have had the same trouble.

Once you fix the screen then you can do what ever you want i.e. make a server...
Good Luck,
dana

Thanks, danahyatt,
I did try this and I had some success, but it didn't solve the problem.
I did get a little enthusiastic and wound up trying to scratch out the sealing padding, I think some liquid was spilt on the device (during a baby sitting episode), not to mention the device has also been dropped once too often. My first palm died from mad screen syndrome too, which leads me to pine for a capacitive touchscreen in my its replacement.

so Laughing Man, i think its past its warranty, although i would send it in if there was hope.

thanks,

Tim

So Thesandlord,
My n810 stays at home always on, I log in to it via SSH from work.
I then want to send a `wol magic packet` to my PC so i can turn it on and create a SSH tunnel for RDP.

(I am into power saving so I turn my PC off-hibernate, My motivator for the n810 was also power related meaning i could use a fraction of a % of power to assess the Internet, without waiting and turning on my PC.)

As I said I have a basic knowledge of DOS 15years ago, I know python is a programing language, but if it can send wol magic packet to wake up my PC i would love to know how. (control C - Control V, change IP and MAC i can handle,i can click on an installer too )

as for BT mouse thats an option.

as for operating though the slide out keyboard I cant seem to activate the 3 menu items on the left of the screen, can this be done with the keyboard?

thanks,

Tim

I had a problem very much like this a couple of times on my N800. Strangely, for me it healed itself both times.

The only thing I could figure out was that something got wet, maybe when I opened the case to change the battery (which I did frequently), and the healing effect was because it dried out after a few days?

my screen did get a little wet but its been dry for a month now, I can't pin the problem down to wet fingers, my problem is more probably a cause of abuse.

this sounds more like my problem, if my screen stops working i can only get it active by sliding it open and pushing and twisting slightly on the screen.

so just a few more questions to extend the life of my beloved n810:

is there any benefit to running an Debian or Ubuntu over Meamo? given my device wont have much of a touch screen.

how do you send WOL magic packets on a local network using Python?

Thanks,
Tim
