Just found this forum and it looks awesome.
I browsed around and found some answers to questions I had but I still got some, sorry, that I either want confirmed or find an answer to...so..please bear with me...

What do I want?
I'm looking for a portable solution to bring with me to internet cafes and to use in bed when I don't want to bring my laptop with me.
I want to use it for;
a) Browse the internet,
b) VoiP (Skype) calls,
c) Check and write emails, and
d) Play games

Some questions:
1) How is the sound quality when using it for Skype calls?
Do you use a headset? Does a USB-headsetwork? How is the 'speaker phone quality'?

2) I think I remember reading that the N810 does not support Java. How does this limit YOUe? (Meaning give me some example of stuff you can't do but would like to if it could support Java).

3) Would it be possible to install an email tool like Thunderbird and work on emails in an off-line mode and then when connected have the emails sent out?

4) I'm a huge MMORPG fan (yea, I'm a nerd) - are there any MMO's that you could actually play using the N810?

5) How easy/hard is t to install new applications and how limited are you? Meaning, can you install and run any application that would run on your PC assuming that you got the diskspace?

6) I am also considering the Mylo Com-2 (small, touchscreen, etc). Apart from a larger screen what do you see as the main benefit to the N810 over the Mylo?

Thanks in advance!

1/ Sound quality is quite good. You can't use USB headset but there's a wired headset provided and you can use a bluetooth phone headset
2/ I didn't need java
3/ the built-in email (modest) can handle this for you
4/ MMORPG : don't know
5/ there are a lot of applications in the repositories (check out maemo.org/downloads) and they are very easy to install if you have internet access (one click in a list)
6/ open source and lots of third party applications !

Hope this helps

Hi fredoll,

#1) Too bad about not being able to use a USB-headset - I like the one I got. However, any sound quality issues/differences between using a wired headset vs the bluetooth one when on the 810?

#3) Thanks, but would it even be an option to install Thunderbird or do I have to use the pre-installed email client?

I don't use Skype, but in general, the sound quality of the N810 is good both through the built-in speakers and headphones. Very high quality headphones can reveal a bit of background hiss, but in most cases, it's not noticeable.

I've used my N800 and N810 for non-Skype VoIP, and I've been very happy with the sound quality.

I can't load the server monitor for my streaming server at work.

I don't know if Thunderbird has ever been successfully ported, but there have been attempts made at the task. Regardless, other mail clients that are on the platform will handle offline use.

You might look at The Mana World.

5) How easy/hard is t to install new applications...
In general, very easy. Most applications are in an online repository called "Extras". Enable that in the application manager, and then you can just select a new app, click "OK" a few times, and start using the application.

There are some applications that require more complicated installs, but the general effort is to simplify those and move them to Extras whenever possible.

...and how limited are you? Meaning, can you install and run any application that would run on your PC assuming that you got the diskspace?
If your PC runs Linux, then you may be able to get close to it. Please see Easy Debian.

1/ you'll get the best sound with a wired headset (the one included is not too bad) the NIT supports a standard 3.5 stereo jack and you can even get a splitter that allows you to connect a headset and a mic (USB headset bring their own soundcard : it could work if you can find and install the drivers : which is not very easy)

3/ I don't think thunderbird is ported to Maemo and I'm not sure it is well adapted to thinger or stylus use ... I know there is at least one other email client available : claws mail but I think modest is doing a great job !

I have to agree, modest is an excellent email client. pop3 and imap are both easy to setup and use and offline use works seamlessly. It it also very well integrated into the OS so new mail notification is simple. I use thunderbkrd on the desktop but wouldn't use it my my n810 even if it were available (which it may be)

You don't actually need a headset really, you can just use standard 3.5mm headphones and talk into the tablet's own built-in microphone. The mic is quite sensitive, you don't have to be near it for people to hear you.

3.5mm is by far the most common headphone standard, so you should be able to find some very high quality headphones which will work with the tablet.
