I am proposing creating a hackers forum. Run by the user, owned by the users.

To me, it really makes sense, since this siie can concentrate on supported applications and provide a separate place to discuss hacks on the internettablets. Not only does this stem from my dis-satisfaction with the kingdom at the moment. It may just make sense. Then people wont come here thinking somehow that these hacks are safe and work flawlessly because maemo.org is where they learned about them?

I have thrown up a forum site, perhaps not the best choice of words?

Anyway, read the charter, if enough people join I will hand over the keys.

Want to run the show, here's your opportunity.

Why?

Why not keep everything centralised? Or do you believe that you will be censored in some way (I note that this site is run by the community not by corporate Nokia).

Well it seems that since the removal of the sub-forums in the alternatives section, the information is scattered and not easy to find. If the answer to all my problems is to do it myself, I am just doing it myself.

I am not saying this is going to happen. If however enough people support it and want to build a new site, I will cover the expense for the hosting for the next 1.5 years, then the community may have to all chip in 5$ for the next year. Honestly a site without ads or sponsorship is seeming better and better. And we can as a community decide our own fate.

Not sure what you mean by ‘hackers’. Do you mean anything that is not mainstream Maemo?

I am very unhappy about the software availability for my N800 and have been since the day I bought it.

AFAIK there is now no future progress for the device with Maemo and the only hope lies with Android and Mer.

So if you mean by a hackers forum one where these two projects are included, then yes, please count me in.

Even more so if the forum will also include related projects such as SmartQ.

Of course nothing is preventing anybody from making many discussion forums for Maemo related items. Take any SW platform, there is usually a central information/discussion hub and then additional sites and forums. That's cool and all that.

Perhaps that site can be then have a hue selector so that every user can tint the background the colour they want to look like. It's like the Smiths song: "I wear Black on the outside / 'Cause Black is how I feel on the inside."

Then again, in all seriousness, I have difficulties in seeing how such a forum would gain much traction, at least in this stage of Maemo.

Would their be a MER group with discussions only about MER and same for Android, and KDE and others, yes

Nothing is excluded, however I am not supporting MER or Android, so I can't speak for their maintainers. If they were to not want to answer questions their, then it would be only community support.

But yes, that is exactly what I mean.

I have to say penguinbait, good idea !

I think separate forum'd be good idea because:

- "Hackers" / Advanced Users can help each other
- Beginners like me can follow what's going on without browsing though all "asking for help" questions.

The only reason why that kind of forum would not be a good idea is: itT forum / other forums used also for helping people, might loose some active members = Beginners will not get help that easily.

But, yeah, i agree with separate forum for hackers/developers

One of the goals of moving InternetTabletTalk to talk.maemo.org was to avoid community and documentation fragmentation. I think making another forum site would only start to reverse this goal.

Having said that, it's not necessarily a bad idea. One of the goals of talk.maemo.org is to be friendly to "all users." Maybe we need another forum which "rejects" new users, holding discussion only for those who have enough knowledge to actually participate in the conversation. This could be a quicker place to bounce around ideas, and work on code without being "held down" answering questions that have already been asked 20 times before.

In addition, I'd be willing to admin/help admin/mod/whatever if you need the help.

Fan sites like this aren't necessarily a bad thing. I think Aisu's thoughts (posted on your forum) echo mine:
A hacker forum would be amazing. Real, unfettered, and simple communication between real developers with no bureaucrats or demagogues in the way. Awesome.
