Hello, I just bought a new N810 and I will receive soon a microsdhc card 16go class4.
I love it but I'll need some help to get the best of this wonderful device. Thus, I have some questions.

Concerning the system management:
1) I heard about Advanced Power Monitor, but I don't find a lot of information about it. What is it exactly? Where to download it?
http://www.gronmayer.com/it/ and search for it

2) How to specify a swap zone and where (internal or external card)? Which size?
Control Panel - Memory, I set mine at 128Mb

3) I have the basic configuration, so the programs are installed on the device memory. But I guess that after having installing too much softwares (ie games), the place will be missing. How to specify an other place for the installation? Do you advise to install everything on a specific location?
Basic configuration is enough place for the moment
4) Other thing to know/do for better optimisation?

5) Which terminal to use?
The default one with bash+rootsh

Videos&music&photos:
I'm quite impressed, I have copied some films on the internal memory to try it with Mplayer and it works without any specific encoding, wahoou !
6) What do you use as video player? Mplayer is quite ugly and I haven't found how to forward without the keyboard.
Kmplayer
Which codecs to install?
Nothing
as it has been able to read my divx, I assume Mplayer is installed with some. Has someone already tried VLC?
Seems difficult

7) The basic software for the multimedia library is quite bad to my mind and It hasn't been able to read correctly the tag of my ogg files. What are you using?
Canola !!!

8) Which images viewer?

Internet&communication:
9) Is there a possibility to install the last version of flash?
Not yet

10) Do you use an other browser (opera, ...)?
Default one with webkiteal or Teal

11) Which software use to be able to call skype contacts using the camera? If no solution, which software to use the camera for calling?
Not really found yet

12) Which software for torrent? I have installed Transmission, I don't know if it is the best for that
Transmission is fine

GPS: not tried yet, and I have erased all the map, I don't know how

Generic questions:
13) What is the utility of the bottom button on the left of the screen? The upper is to switch between application
14) Some applications can't be deleted from the menu panel; is there a solution?

15) Which document viewer do you use?
Fbreader, Evince for PDF

16) How to delete the contacts menu? I'll not use it.

I know that is a lot of questions and that I might be able to find some answers in previous threads, but I hope that you will be able to help me.

Thank you

I'm in one of those moods....

Sorry, never used it (I would assume the name says it all).

The default for the swap file is 128 mb on the internal 2gb card (you have to enable it thru the control panel). I'm not sure about customizing that, but I'm pretty sure it's not that easy.

The Linux file sytem always exists in one physical location, therefore all apps have to be installed on the same card. The default setting is that the file system is installed on the 256mb card. In this case, all apps also have to be installed on the 256mb card.

So, if you really need more space for apps, you can always set up the file system on either the 2gb internal card, or the external card.

(I, however, seem to have more than enough space on the 256mb, so I've never actually dealt with booting from a card first hand. It seems hard, but according to the links below, it can be done!)

The Second-Easiest Way to Clone the OS to MMC, Dual-Boot; try here first .

X-Terminal (the one that comes with it) works just fine IMHO. Just remember to install rootsh and type "sudo gainroot" every time you want to do something that requires root privileges.

Personally, I use mPlayer for videos and the default media player for audio (I like how fast they load, don't really care how they look).

Codecs? I haven't found a file that I can't play!

If the looks of programs are important to you, I've heard good things about Canola, haven't really used it tho (tried it once, didn't like how long it took to load).

VLC isn't going to run in Maemo, that much I can tell you. It could quite possibly run in an alternative OS, but for performance-sake, I think you should stick with one made for the tablets.

Truthfully, I don't believe I own a single ogg file, sorry!

At this moment, there is not . However, I have recently been given a glimmer of hope from (I believe) an Adobe representative...

The Open Screen Project is supposedly bringing flash to "all devices" (or at least trying to).

I like Tear a lot. It's still being developed, but already I like it better than microB or the other browsers I've tried. You can get it by setting up Qole's Repository.

(Goto Application Manager > File > Tools > Catalogs > add (or new) > input the following)

Catalogue Name: Qole
Web address: http://qole.org/repository
Distribution: maemo
Components: main

Then go into browse installable, and search "tear".

Sorry, I have yet to video-call..

Yes! The button on top of the N810, all the way to the left, next to the volume is the (generally) universal full-screen toggle button!

Transmission is the best we've got. It works good for me.

Download Maemo-Mapper from the Extras repository. It's free, and it downloads maps in the program!

It not only allows you to switch between programs, it also pops up when you receive a new email via the default email client! (I'm sure it has other uses too, just haven't come across them)

There IS a way to do it, but it's kind of complicated and may involve putting your N810 into... a mode that might hurt it... I would just create a new group, keep it at the bottom, and put all the icons you don't use in there (out of sight, out of mind)

I use the default pdf viewer (very rarely), Abiword for document editing / viewing... or, you know, whatever pops up when I click the file

The only way you can get rid of it (from the desktop) is by installing another app that makes available an icon to put there. For instance, Truejournal's Tear Navigator (in Extras-Devel) makes it so you can put a Tear icon in that area. You can then make that icon take its place... there must always be THREE icons there (for some reason).

However, if you start using the default email client, the contacts icon becomes useful (I use it all the time.)

Ok, that raised my n00b eyebrows just a tad.
My assumption was that the OS would always reside in the internal 2gb memory and memory cards would simply add storage space - like an external hard-drive may do to a PC.
Are you saying that you need to install the OS on every memory card that you intend to run apps from?
If so...how about every customization, theme, app etc that is running on your tablet..wouldn't they also have to be copied to the card as well?
I may well be missing something really obvious here...

So...programs are only visible to the device for download if you add the repository it/they reside in.
Is there a list somewhere of all possible repositories that may be of interest?

Ok, fixed that skypae thing, thanks (earned )... I'm not really sure, going off memory of something I read. Still editing.

About repositories:
Yup, you gott set em up. I'm not sure if there's a master list, i think there was one at one point...

But as far as the file system goes, the rule is this (someone correct me if I am wrong):

Any ONE OS has to be inclusively installed on ONE physical drive, card, etc. The OS can ACCESS all the cards and drives and what-have-you's in the world, but the OS and Apps which run upon it, MUST be installed in one location.

Right?

(I'm a windoze user, cut me some slack I once ran a game I had installed on my vista partition from my xp install...)

May be because it's 1am or maybe I'm naturally daft..but I have a hard time getting it.

Ex: I get my N810. The OS and some apps are installed in the internal memory.
All is fine but one day I decide I need more space and I get a 16gb memory card.
a) Can I still boot off the OS that resides in the device's memory and simply access and execute apps/data that I store on the memory card?
b) IF I have to have the OS installed on the card I'm using..ugh..wouldn't that be a pain beyond belief...having to move all needed apps and setting there..when things changes and I some day want to boot off the device..having to transfer all the settings/apps back to it (things may have changed)?
c) If I have to boot off the card that have the apps I'm doing isn't that then saying that my combined memory is always just the card I'm booting off - as that's the only place I can access?

Obviously I am getting something wrong as the above doesn't make any sense at all

I'm off to bed

You can't run apps from a secondary source, they have to be within the file system of the OS.

You can, however clone the OS and boot from another card (see the link somewhere up there) From what Geraldko says, it can be pretty easy.

What's happening in this case is that you are making an exact copy of what you have now, but on the bigger card. Then you can resize the filesystem, and have oodles of space.

This information is all on here somewhere (the search HATES me).

///EDIT

***Pre-bed @3:30am NOTE***

My biggest fear is that I wake up tomorrow, check this, and have like 20 people sayin that I'm wrong on all this stuff So be nice!

///EDIT2

That is one BIG FRICKIN post! Anything to help out my n00b bretheren

Maemo is a true linux system
Apps are usually installed in /usr/bin
to execute an app the filesystem holding the file has to support permissions (which FAT doesn't)
so THEORICALLY if you format your external card as ext2/3 it would be possible to run apps from there ...
BUT then you would loose the ability to access the card via USB on your windows ...
AND if you really need space the best thing would be to clone your OS to your internal 2GB card, taking into account the small size of a large majority of apps it would be really suprising that you get out of space on that card.
Every possibility you could imagine on a desktop is transposable to your NIT, usually it is just not worth the hassle.

My Advice : start with the default setting (internal 256) and if/when you really are out of space, clone your OS to the internal 2GB
This way, you get to keep your external card as FAT for "consumption files" storage (music, video ...) and you can change it easily without any impact on your system

PS : the Map Application can download any map you wish too

Thank you all for yours answers !!!! That will certainly help me a lot. I hope to have time this weekend to try all this stuff !!

Another questions:
- To put the device in sleep mode, is it automatic? For the moment, I only lock the screen.
- For games, what are your advices? Which emulator (PS, Game Boy)?

Thanks again !

Ok thanks I THINK I understand now, but got some follow-up questions....
a) You mention to keep the OS in the internal 256. I then assume that there is a built in 256MB Flash memory that is separate from the built-in 2GB memory?

b) So what you use additional memory cards for is simply for non-application data (like music, documents, etc). Makes more sense to me now.

Final example/questions:
1) Assume I still have the OS happily running of the 256 (I assume 256MB Flash memory). I buy a 16GB memory card. Can I now access data stored on both the internal 2GB as well as the new 16GB card - making my combined memory 18GB - or am I restricted to just access one of the two?

2) Is there a significant/noticeable slowness in access and playing a movie for instance if it is stored on the internal 2GB memory or on a card you plugged in?

Thanks, you guys truly are the best...!
