I downloaded the maps from http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=17408 (Benelux and Germany aplps 2007 edition) directly to the proper folder, then I started Map it shows the green Wayfinder logo very briefly and then crashes.
How can I get this fixed?

I now renamed map to another name and started without any map folder.
Now it started and allowed me to download any maps.
I am curious whether it works.

save a back-up of the directory map in your PC and download as many maps as you can on the PC in case you need them later. So next time if you need it you don't need to go to the net (for example your Hawaii trip 
)
