Indeed I was able to copy 14.83gb worth of stuff to the card. Afterward I took the card out of the adapter to take a look. Something must have happened when I put the card-adapter assembly back: it disappeared from the file manager. Right now I am trying different insertion techniques to see if I can bring it back. Stay tuned...
