I think the culprit is Panucci using gstreamer for playing. gstreamer sometimes produces distorted sound on the tablet.

Thanks, yeah I even had my girlfriend do a 'blind' test today and she also picked out the noise when playing through Panucci.
Too bad, I liked the resume functionality in that app but in the end sound quality is more important to me so I'll uninstall it.

I'll make sure to add support for the maemo media player backend in the next release so you'll have a choice but for the moment we only have gstreamer support.
btw, is there a way to reproduce this bug? I'd be curious to find out what's causing the problem.

I downloaded to podcast episodes. One from Engadget and one from Keith and the Girl. Both had the same issue when playing through Panucci - but did not display that 'hizzing' when played through media player or through my Zune player.

I noticed in your signature you say you're using a pair of "BlueAnt Z9i" headphones which use bluetooth, right?
If so, could you please try using a non-bluetooth pair of headphones and see whether you can reproduce this bug?
Thanks
I'm listening to two podcasts through Panucci and in both podcasts there is a faint, but audible, fan-sounding background noise (like a very even highway traffic...or a steady wind).
I downloaded the same podcasts to my Zune Mp3 player - and listened to them using the same headset and the sound is not there.
Anyone else experiencing something like this?
EDIT: I tried playing the same episodes through Mediaplayer and the hissing background noise is gone. It seems like Panucci was the guilty culprit here!!
