Every browser I know opens a new window when the Shift key is pressed during a link click, however, this is missing in the Maemo browser. Instead, it is a context menu item for links to open in a new window. Does anyone know why this is so or how we can get the Shift+Click feature implemented. Thanks.

Hmmmm?!
When I left-click and hold shift somewhere in this window here (Firefox 3.x on Fedora10) NOTHING happens.

Shift-clicking a link under Firefox 3.0.11 (Windows XP) opens the link in a new browser window.

can't you just tap and hold on the link to bring up the menu?

Not on a bumpy car/bus/train ride. More often than not the stylus will bounce just enough before the "hold" part kicks in and microb will open the link in the current window. Annoying, that.

That's the "contextual menu" that was brought up in the first post. Of course, while Shift+Tap would be helpful on an N810, it wouldn't work on an N800.

Context menu...okay.
Is there someplace I should be looking to learn all of the interface tricks instead of accidentally stumbling across them?

Well, the use of "tap and hold" to activate context-sensitive menus is explained in the Help application on your tablet itself. After launching Help, go to "Nokia [N810|N800] Internet Tablet" and then "Device control" to see the topic.
