While the X1 may run WinMo, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 is completely spec'd out and running Android. Not only is it a nice piece of hardware, but also has an arguably great software as well.

This looks like a winner:

Plus a rumored 1GHz snapdragon CPU w/ acceleration. I'm not sure of the performance, though as clock-ratings can lie. From what I've read, though, it's no slouch.

The phone also has a wonderful sleek profile. Are there any flaws? Drool!

The commentary
I've not seen a better combination of features for me; especially since I don't highly value a keypad. This is now my front running device replacing the fabled N900 as most wanted.


I just hope it has capacitive touch (multi?!), though, something tells me it will.

WinMo'd be better?

One man's flaw is another man's feature.

I count Android in the feature column.

What I count in the flaw category is:
no physical keyboard
no dpad

I've never used Android personally, so I can't comment. I'm only aware of it through blog posts and screen caps. But from what I understand, much of the tech is open source, which is a plus. It also seems to have great support, and great momentum.

So long as I can get to the command line and/or remote-ssh, I'm golden. It seems that this is taken care of: http://code.google.com/p/connectbot/

There is also rich scripting with much access to the android API:
http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/ which I would imagine it would make it very simple to make custom or convenience apps. This is perfect for me in that I may want to automate one or two tasks on my handheld. The icing is that you can use popular standardized languages (eg. python) further reducing lock in.

Lastly, I really like the idea of android's java based sdk. Sure Java may have its flaws, but the idea of write-once run anywhere is a tremendously POWERFUL concept especially now in this time of great hardware/software fragmentation. How many mobile OS's are there? It's nice to know that android apps can outlive the devices they were first run on (similar portability to compiling source code -- without the compile -- easy peasy).

I could be wrong about all of this, but it seems that google has made a lot of smart choices with their new OS (ok, android made them, then google bought android -- but still). It's wonderful that its well supported and most importantly open! While it may not be perfect now, just look at the new interfaces (eg. Xperia X3) to see that it is evolving quite quickly.

When the X3 comes out, I'll be on board. Unless of course something else tempts me!

since it allready boots linux, isn't there a high possibility someone hacks other linux-based OS to run?

I saw the X3 elsewhere and rushed to ITT to see if anyone else had picked it up.

it does indeed look like a fabulous successor to the n800.

I don't know much about android, whether it's Great/OK/Rubbish, but you know what, it doesn't matter too much because android runs on linux, so there's every chance some other distro or hack can be applied to do what you want!


So long as the price is fair, it's likely to replace my n800.

Just curious, what's the flaw in Android. I've only had my Magic for a short time but I find I like as much as I do my N800, hasn't replaced it yet but we'll see.
