Hi i am eagerley awaiting delivvery of my new Nokia N810 and have been researching a lot into it over the last few days.

Just needed clarification in that i am looking to get a 16gb micro sdhc card with mini adapter, need the space, but was unsure as to whether any downloaded applications and widgets can be stored on the external card and still be used, or do they have to be on the internal card???

thanks

By default? No, you can't run applications from the external card or the internal NAND flash.

Probably the most straight forward option would be to boot from the 16 GB card, then you can run applications from it.

FYI, there are 3 storage devices. Internal flash (256MB but is compressed), internal NAND (2GB) and external SD. The out of the box configuration only allows apps on the internal flash.

See here.

In this configuration, downloaded applications will be installed on to the card.

It's not for the faint of heart. I suggest you try out the default configuration for a while. Put your music and movies on the 16GB card. The application space isn't too limited in my opinion.

It's not as complicated as it looks, but as is suggested, just run the default configuration for awhile -- you can do a lot with it.
