Hi chaps,

I understand that Maemo is linux based. Does that mean that with the release of the n900 we might be able to run native linux apps on Maemo and thus access the full wealth of apps for that OS type ?

Yes, that is correct.
The N900 runs Linux and you can code or port a lot of software to it.

However do take into account the size and nature of the device. Some optimisation may be needed to get your favourite desktop app to run on a small form factor device.

Superb!

How far have people taken this? Has anyone ported completely amazing, improbable, software to the nokia devices? I've seen transport tycoon has been ported, which is sheer genius, but what other stuff? Open Office? X Windows?

Yes, Open Office has been ported before and there has been a screenshot of it running on the N900 (good luck using it though with such tiny controls ). The device is actually running X already.

I use GIMP from time to time on my N800. I also have a full development environment on it. Given the amazing community we have here I think it will be just a matter of time before you can run KDE or Ubuntu on the N900. Also, thanks to the efforts of many on this forum I often connect (with my N800, which is LESS capable that the N900) to large (1.5 terabyte) USB hard drives, a DVD drive, bluetooth keyboard and mouse, etc.

It is very close to a full PC. The only thing that may be missing is an external monitor though the N900 has TV out (what resolution?) and there are rumors of 1900x1600 3D accelerated add-ons.

Just remeber that these Nokia Nxxx devices are NOT x86 based but armel based so you would need a different development enviroment for the programs.
