@ korbe I was thinking of an app with zune functionality and syncing capability. And how would I find member meetings or gatherings in the nj/ny area of the usa?

the zune hd is a microsoft media player that uses zune software on the pc to sync media with the device. It shows how many times you've played a song or video. It also has a market place it connects to where you can purchase music videos and games. And a social network where your music plays on the device can be shared with community. I love the flow of the ui and the themes. Also the album art

- File Transfer: the N900 is Full-UMS. Using software is not required (exept a file manager) and any software that manages a audio/video library can transfer data to N900. (Rhythmbox, Banshee, Amarok, etc ...)
- For a "Market Place, we have a "Application Manager" to download software. For Music download, I creat a software to download music on Jamendo (to start) for the school where I finished my last year of study. It should be out in November. After, I may add others catalogs (Magnatune, Dogmazik, etc ...).
- For social network share, we can use XMPP instant messaging protocol. For exemple: Send tag info of music that you listen, extend a DLNA network to your contact with the "pipe" in Telepathy Framework. There are plenty of development opportunities around the XMPP protocol: Look at this list of 161 extensions.
- We have a "Album art" in Maemo Media Player in Maemo 5. Look here

You really need to think of this as a business.

If you are successful in creating an application that works like a Zune HD, then it will cost hundreds or thousands of times the cost of a Zune HD. You will probably spend an equal amount on lawyers when you start receiving letters from MS on your violation of multiple patents, and or copyrights. In fact you can start now by going out and buying a Zune HD to give to the person that will write the requirements. Open this person an account in the Zune app store so that they can buy things. They will need to see how this wonderful flow and interface works.

Open source programmers don't sit around just waiting for a good idea, they have more of them than they have time to program. For many of them this is their hobby, so they are going to do work that interests them, not the latest cool idea that you have.

If you want to hire a programmer, then you need to start talking in the thousands of dollars range.

Is this still something you want to invest in?

I thought Nokia was looking at getting the Ovi Store up and running for Maemo down the track (unsure of time frame). I am assuming its not the syncing with music etc. but it does sounds like a market place they are going to be working on for Maemo as well as use it with Symbian.

Cheers

Eh, you could always completly open source the code and release it everywhere on the internet. Then let the Streisand effect take care of any lawyers (and of course make it difficult to find the developer). (You can tell I don't like the current state of patents and copyright huh =P).

But it really depends on what you mean by Zune HD functionality. You mean file syncing? Then that shouldn't be to problematic. Heck people routinely do things like that for iTunes. Though I believe Apple also offers an API to do a sync with less features though (for example, Blackberry has their own app that syncs with iTunes).

You people and your copyright paranoia, STFU!

As far what you want, I'm still unclear. I was going to respond to your other thread but which of the following is what you are asking?

1.) N900 sync to Zune HD. This would require the creation of a plugin supporting the proprietary MTP transfer that the Zunes use. The purpose of this is to put music ONTO the Zune.

2.) Replicate the Zune UI in OS2009. Somewhat like running XBMC front-end on Linux (or whatever).

3.) Other: ___________

Honestly if you want it to look and be as smooth as the Zune HD, then get the Zune. The N900 does not use the Tegra architecture and probably does not support nearly as smooth graphical transitions, etc. However, that is not to say that it couldn't come close and that it doesn't support MANY MANY things that the Zune doesn't.

I don't believe we have reached the point for a truly all-in-one device that excels at EVERYTHING. This is largely due to patents and competing architecture.

If you can get what you want working on say Ubuntu (x86; Desktop) then it should be possible to port the tablets.

And please keep in mind what you are getting into.

The N8X0s were "Internet tablets" they excel at portable web browsing as well as being mobile computers with the power of Linux. The N900 is in much the same way a portable computer, plus phone capabilities and a decent camera. These aren't dedicated Portable Media Players.

Look into Canola2, Mediabox, and the others here. Cause that's what we got so far.

There was one game ported to OS2008 for $20 that I recall...
