Hi

Sorry if this feels too simple a question, but those of you who have had the pleasure of playing around with N900, could anyone confim or give any detail about speed dialing? What I am looking for is the one press speed dial that was very nice on candybar form factor phones. Just one press of a button, longer than normal typing of course, and the phone would call a preset number. Is it possible to make a call with one single press/click from the desktop of n900? Official specs list speed dial as a feature but the US manual that was linked to in this forum mentions nothing about that. Not a dealbreaker for me, but would much appreciate any extra info on that.

Not quite speed dialling as you describe it, but you can put contacts on your desktop which you'll be able to phone with a couple of clicks.

it would be a nice feature if the contact desktop shortcut would function as follows:

1 tap: call
tap and hold: whatever.
2 taps: whatever.

I think 1 tap should be as it is at the moment (brings up the contact 'card', allowing you to choose to email, IM, SMS, phone, or just to look up their address or birthday). A long press could be defined to do the user's preferred action, e.g. phone, email, etc.

For the target use case, the current setup is the best especially since IM is expected to be used heavily by users.. but lets see what you guys come up with.

Pelago, yeah I know the contact icons, I was wondering how they behave with long press. And the long press action first of all should be there and yeah it would be really cool if it was also user definable

in the nutshell, a symbian equivalent of speed dialing is not available. the desktop shortcut is not an option if you want to easily and quickly make a call with one hands. I miss having the ability to easily call my 5 contacts from the dialpad. This was a core feature in S60 and its absence on the 900 is disappointing.

is it possible/difficult to write a custom Phone app?

Unfortunately, it turns out that long presses aren't allowed on desktop widgets so this won't be possible.
