So, let's get a thread going - what's the absolute cheapest way to get unlimited data on T-Mobile U.S. for the N900? I'm probably going to have to pick up a SIM card, but there's tons of options.

$39.99 T-Mobile total unlimited data-only plan I believe.

Doesn't that require a voice plan?

This is the thread i've been waiting for someone to get going...(not sure why i didn't?)
Data Only...

I don't need/want voice. So $39.99 looks like the best so far.

If you have a voice plan, isn't it cheaper to use the $19.99 text+data bundle? Unless they pick up the phone like rumors say, you can get away without paying the ridiculous smartphone plan price. Or is that package not offered anymore?

How is the coverage of the 3G and how well would VOIP work over it?

Basically I want to know if I can get away without having any voice plan.

The coverage is improving, but I think ATT/verizon still have better coverage right now.
regarding VOIP: I've used skype a number of times, and it works adequately. It is not perfect, not as good as a regular cell phone call (there usually is a little lag.) but is acceptable. Gizmo does not work well over 3g for me. The voice call is not smooth, it is always choppy.

BTW I use an N800 tetherd to an SE TM506 with unlimited data from Tmo for $19.95, and I'm on a 4 line family voice plan with the rest of my family. We share 1000 minutes(we never go over, since tmobile calls are free, and we mostly make those), and pay approximately $130 or $135/mo for the bundle I think...

i have a feeling that when tmo releases it officially, they will bump the data plan like they did on the g1.

get a regular phone with them and then add the total internet, and you can change the settings in the phone to access the 3g and not pay the extra $60+/year.
