Would you pay $29 for an microSD containing all 3m articles in the english wikipedia?

I know i would.

Openmoko have just launched a $99 ereader device preloaded with wikipedia on microSD cards:

How feasible would it be to just buy the microSD card and use it on an n900 via a offline wiki reader application?

I would pay for this given the convenience, because although there are free ways of achieving the same end, building a database for 3m articles apparently takes forever.

What do you think?

Or just wait for a Maemo 5 version of aarddict.

Or just... you know, use the N900 as intended and just hit up the live version of Wikipedia.

@ lma - is it confirmed? and how long does it take to build a database of an en.wikipedia 7GB dump file?

@ Zerojay - roaming data charges can be crippling, the option for an offline wiki would be greatly appreciated.

We don't live in a cloud (yet)
Though your mind might be in a mist

Maybe in your location, maybe unsecure wifi and compatible 3g are plenty available. But not in all locals (or any that I am aware of) is that true.

Furthermore, bumping a thread dissing what the OP asked is not nice.

I don't use wikipedia that much to justify this but I think I'll download this and see if I can't convert it to a format easily accessible on the NITs.

Look at the page, the author is working on a new version based on PyQt4 which probably accounts for the delay, and you can download ready-made dumps with bittorent.

thank you all.

still, for the convenience of regular updates it would be great to simply recieve a SD card in the post and plug it in.

Where was I dissing anyone?

And there's no need to warn me about the cost of data. I'm in Canada, pretty much the 3rd world in terms of mobile data.

Im currently downloading enwiki-20090810-1.torrent (7.5 Gb) from http://aarddict.org/t/enwiki-20090810-1.torrent but only 1 seed and 2 leeches so its pretty slow going. Hoping to package aardict for maemo 5 over the weekend.

i take it the aardaddict wiki dumps are already precompiled into the right format for the program, and all we have to do is extract it?

also, how much space will be required when it is extracted?
