You must be an iphone user

You can put pretty much whatever you want on there AFAIK, although some apps may not run from that space.

Why is that, actually?

Linux and every Unix I have used (IRIX, Solaris, BSD) have defined paths for apps such as /usr/bin and /opt. Edited due to correction. If so it should be easy to change that configuration once we have the phones.

No, (simply put) the /opt (application) partition is 2 GiB. The reason not to use the full 32 GiB for apps is to forbide Windows messing with them, when the device is connected using the USB cable.

So 2GB on the N900 for installing apps? That sounds almost too good to be true, after the rumors of 256MB...

@bemymonkey: Both is true, 256 MB for the root partion, 2GB for additional apps. Both should be plenty for all kinds of apps. I do not think that will ever be an issue to the normal to adanced user. And the ueber geeks just repartion the device anyways. How needs a Windows accessable partion.

256 MB is plenty for boot. And 2GB is plenty for apps.

My Ubuntu 64bit server install has 158MB in /usr/bin while my 64bit desktop (laptop) install has 305M in /usr/bin .

I'd like a Windows accessible partition... the N900 was supposed to be my chance to learn a little Linux, but I wasn't planning on switching completely

That's what the rest of the space is for.
