I've got an Acer Aspire One mini-laptop (Intel Atom processor, 512mb RAM, 8GB storage plus 8GB SD card)) which I would like to install Ubuntu on.

However, I'm not sure whether to use Ubuntu Netbook Remix or Easy Peasy. Can anyone give advice on which to choose?

The machine would mainly used for web browsing, word processing and the official Skype client.

(I know I asked something like this earlier in the year but that was for an even less powerful machine.)

Have you considered Eeebuntu? It can install onto the SD card.

I have netbook remix on but use the standard interface, works lovely for me over 3G via my current e90, wifi etc. only thing I did was switch to Amarok 1 rather than 2 as I prefer the interface and way it works than 2 which is by all intents still a beta.

even MythTV works nice ( my aim is to work it into being a car PC as well as a media system for home/caravan)

I tried puppy, mint, easy peasy, and eebuntu.
easypeasy was the easiest, but my fav is eeebuntu 3.0 standard
the NBR gui is not for me..
there all sorta the same, except for the support forums..
though now I run tiny7 windows,

IMO go with Ubuntu Netbook Remix. It's well supported, stable and in active development from Canonical. With that said I'd download both and run them in an emulator [on your PC] or off an 1G SD card to see which you prefer. If you don't want to download both then just IMO go with UNR.

With either one I'd watch your swap. While 512M RAM should be enough more RAM is normally better.

Edit: Also give Moblin ( http://moblin.org/ ) a spin. It has a very quick boot time and an interesting interface design.

My son's Asus Eee freezes in the middle of the boot-up process, so when I brought it to the summit I booted it from a USB drive with Eeebuntu on it.

Worked fabulously. I don't know the other alternatives, but I like Eeebuntu a lot.

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala is about to be released at the end of the month. Although there might still be rough quirks found in the find few days and weeks it may be worth it for you to wait for this release instead of installing the previous Ubuntu 9.10 Jaunty Jalodifficultenglishwordwhateverjazzrabbit.

You can always try with CD/DVD + USB or USB_stick/SD.

Aergh... how many netbook versions of ubuntu are there? Why couldn't they focus on doing one version?

OTOH, if you want to experiment, UNR is available as a 9.10 beta remix right now.

BTW, a jackalope is a made up word for a made up animal. In some parts of the American Southwest, you can buy a stuffed jack rabbit with antelope horns attached - a jackalope. Why you would want to buy one is a different question.

I currently use UNR and like the interface. You can see that it is made for smaller screen devices. All hardware works out-of-the-box (except for the SD slots). If you'd like the 512mb extra ram I have lying around, just let me know...
