I just got back from my local German phone retailer. While there he called three different suppliers of his and all said the N900 will not be available till after Jan 01 for retail sales!!!!!! WTF! He says only pre-order and online retailers will have the phones for shipment till then. I think this is really messed up. Could this be true? Could Nokia really miss the Christmas sales season for retail sales?

What even sucks more is that I have a 600 buck credit (returned N97) at this retailer and he will not pre-order for me through the Nokia site because they will not make any profit on it. AAHhhhhhh!!!!

Well that sucks. I was hoping O2 would have it in a week or two, but if even regular stores aren't going to have it until January, O2 probably won't have it until summer

Considering the delay they're having a hard time fufilling pre-orders as is.

I don't even think 20% of the popularity know about this device, apart from a few advertisements in mobile shops or the "nerds" who are all over it. hmm
Agree, N900 launch has been pretty discreet.
Not much mention from the media.

I'll give BBC Click an email for them to check out the device.

20%? That's a pretty good knowledge base for a product that is not even on the market yet! I'd say less than 1% of all mobile phone users in the US know that the n900 exists.

Oh no! The ultimate humiliation! that would mean it would go over it's 3000 target with a merge, rather than with a Noble, meaning-laden post. Like the meaning-laden, significance-filled 2980 posts so far.

Don't forget the internet tablets: 770, N8XX sold over a million units. Given online shops like shopblt.com have over 13K pre orders you can only image places like Amazon and Newegg with several times that number. I could see Nokia selling over 100K just in the US alone via pre orders.

When Nokia says not for the general consumer, they're not necessarily saying a small user base. Maybe not iPhone sales numbers, but I could imagine it doing as well as some of the other phones released recently.

I really can't think of a too many(if any) Nokia phones/products that had huge media hype behind them before hitting stores or after while being hits for Nokia. Phones like E71, E51, 6300 and 5800.
I guess from Nokia products N95 would be the closest thing to N900. It was competing with iphone, lots of hype around the web and 700 euros price. In the end it sold +15 million, but never got to the point that it appeared in main media like iphone.

Would love to see N900 hitting E71 like sales numbers just to get more people up to the platform and make sure Nokia puts it's money behind Maemo. 6300 like +22 million sales would be okish to prove the point too
