Yesterday, I've tried the new Empathy IM client from gnome 2.24, and guess what? Video chat with the NIT works.

I've been able to call my tablet and recieve calls with the webcam enabled. It really works very well!

At last we have PC to tablet videa calls!!

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=819046 for how to.

Realy nice! guess empathy is only gnome/linux.. whould be nice with some mainstream stuff that works with mac and win as well. I tried the amsn port and it works on my N800 but its so terribly slow so real use is no idea.

You guessed right, Empathy is linux only yet.

Maybe it's a way to convince your friends to run linux on their PC.

you install empathy on your desktop pc.

on your NIT, simply use the built in IM client / internet call.

Well, I think eyeBeam/X-Lite are supposed to work well via SIP...

Gizmo works for win, though "works well" maybe to much of a strech. Would love to have skype or msn webcam, since most people i could videochat with are more used to these programs.

Hehe... I installed Ubuntu 9.10 today at my bf's computer and tested empathy there, just to make sure it works and gets across the NAT etc.

I had my N810 connected to my mobile phone via BT and called from the Ubuntu PC to the N810 - I wasn't prepared for the video to pop up, neither was he. He tries to keep away from all the tech things in my life, but I could see this sure impressed him. I bet one of these days he'll want a webcam so he can do video chats when I'm away with my N810

What impressed me was that - after all these years of struggling to get PC to tablet video chats to work - we've now finally reached to point where it "just works" without any tweaking or so. And it works even though the N810 is not on wifi but tethered to a phone. We should have had that when the N800 was launched.
