My N900 is in the air en-route to Australia and I should receive it by Wednesday but I'm beginning to think maybe I've bought the wrong device - please let me have your opinion.

I'm changing from the latest iPhone because whilst the iPhone apps are brilliant and there are thousands of them, the phone itself IMHO is lousy with dropped calls, poor reception and numerous glitches.

It's very user friendly and with phone apps it does lots of things I like eg. One touch dialing, easy SMS etc., etc.

Should I have rather bought an N97 or something similar?

Probably, the n900 is not a user friendly device (when compared to the iPhone). It doesn't do one touch dialing for example, you have to either use turn to potrait mode to activate the phone, type in the contact's names, press the power button then phone, or activate the phone application.

N900 is good choice, 90% of the complains can be fixed through update, which is hopefully coming this year

Your 'initial' major concern should be that you didn't get one of the 'bad' batches (random reboots, mic not working) as it sounds like returning the device (en-route to Australia) could be a hassle..

It certainly will be but fortunately I've friends in the USA who'll look after that if there's a problem.

What I don't want to do is open the package and then find I don't like it.

If you are asking if the N900 is the most usable (and useful) touch-screen phone by Nokia, then the answer is yes. You'll be fine.

"Not a user friendly device" is a ridiculous statement. That's like saying "america is not a large country (when compared to russia)".

Besides, the iPhone is easier to use, but it also does less.

Never before has the acronym YMMV been more appropriate.

If it interested you enough to part with cash to the value of it's price tag, then I'm sure you picked the right device.

Just remember, if it turns out it's not for you, life will go on, the world will not end and you can sell it / return it in exchange for any other device in the world.
