I've been looking into the N900 recently. I have a few concerns though.

1) Whats the app market like? Is the ovi store the "app market"? are there the basic apps, like a notepad, shazam, pandora, stocks, GPS with maps built in?

2) is the screen plastic? does it scratch easily? does it hold up as well as the iphone's nearly scratch proof screen?

3) is there a youtube app? do youtube videos play smoothly like they would on a desktop? I watched a video on youtube of the N900, and they were showing a youtube video that was playing really laggy on the device. Being able to play youtube videos smoothly is a must for me!

4) Does hulu.com work?

5) When you open a new window/tab in the browser, does it show in your overview of running apps? or is the browser considered one running app? For example if you have 3 websites open, does the multitasking screen show all 3 open?

6)how pocket-able is the device? is it unconformable in your pocket? what about when you sit down?

7) I don't have a warranty on my hero, which bothers me the more I think about it, since I bought it on ebay. If I got the N900, I would have a 1 year warranty, is it possible to extend that?

I recently got a htc GSM hero, is nice. I'm thinking about the N900 though. While the hero can multitask, the way the N900 does multitasking is superior, the palm pre sorta does it like the N900 does, in the way that you can see everything thats running.

GAH. Look I don't mean to be an ******* here but all these questions have been asked and answered many times over. Can no one use the damn search. Do we have to have a new thread every time?

PS: welcome to the forums. Sorry for the rant, but seriously just do a couple of basic searches and I guarantee you will find the answers.

Hmm, I thought some of my questions were pretty specific, I wouldn't know where to begin with doing a search for some of them.

No offense to Bratag, because I understand the sentiment, but pulling all of those answers would be a pain in the ***. Furthermore, I think Gabe would benefit from opinions from other Android users. Regrettably I can't help out much because even though i'm a current G1 user, i'm stuck in preorder hell like so many others here. All I can answer based off of my current knowledge is 1 & 2. Which is to say, yes Ovi is a sort of app market, but Maemo also has many other application sources available due to it's linux foundations (moreso than Android by a longshot). Also the screen is pretty resilient, as tested here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tgNdRm-iJs

1) yes the Ovi store will be the "app market" where you can buy apps, though the community is developing a lot of open source apps which are free. click on the downloads tab at the top of the page to see these apps. one is a youtube client.
there is Ovi Maps built in to Maemo and the N900 does have GPS

2) yes it can scratch if you dont treat it well, see here
http://www.tehkseven.net/news/nokia-...ng-experience/

5) yes I think you get a live screen of every tab open

Havent seen the maemo app store yet. coming soon.
The device also has its open source app/pluggin respotory app thing which is similar to cydia on a jailbroken iphone out of the box. This device is very new and there isnt much out there yet but its growing very fast.

the device has got OVI maps 1.0 which should be updated soon. all the other little apps can be downloaded through the phones open source app thing now.

think of this device as being real linux unlike android and its up to the community to make it a good device.

It’s not like the iphone screen because it’s resistive but with a screen protector it’s pretty good. The screen goes into the device a few millimeters so the screen protector will never get dirty and Peal

The phone doesn’t come out of the box with a youtube app but the phone itself has a crazy browser. Surfing youtube off the browser is pritty good. Just remember to bumb up the memory to 40 MB. If you want a youtube app there is one called zoutube which is pritty good.

4) Does hulu.com work?
yes

5) When you open a new window/tab in the browser, does it show in your overview of running apps? or is the browser considered one running app? For example if you have 3 websites open, does the multitasking screen show all 3 open?
The browser is shown as a running app and all other WebPages open at the same time are shown separately

6)how pocket-able is the device? is it unconformable in your pocket? what about when you sit down?
its not to bad in this sense. It does feel a little heavy. What ive noticed with people playing with the device is that it gets a reaction like its a mini laptop and not a phone. Does get more attention then a iphone.

NO. not on ebay especially. Not sure but I think you can if you buy it through an operator with an option for extended warranty. Or at least in Australia you can

1) OVI Store is Nokia's "App Store", however it is not yet enabled for Maemo 5/N900. The OVI Store icon just takes you to a "coming soon" page on the N900. However, like others said, the application manager has access to repositories that you can install stuff from easily - and there is also maemo.nokia.com and click Maemo Select for some officially picked stuff. Eventually OVI Store will be the official, commercial outlet for additional apps, but Maemo being open, of course there will be other community delivery channels as well, and one can configure new ones of these to be shown in the application manager too.

2) The screen is plastic because the resistive screen requires it. The up-side is that it can also be used with a stylus for precision browsing or the like. But because it can be used with a stylus, I would recommend a screen protector. Vikuiti DCQ-160 is my choice, easy to apply and reapply without residue, doesn't seem to affect either visibility or touch with either fingers and stylus. And like someone said, because the screen is recessed a bit, the protector sits comfortably in that recession and becomes nicely a part of the device.

3) I don't know about those videos, were they pre-production or something else, but YouTube videos work great on my phone from the browser. I haven't done any extensive testing, but what I have used, has played well and the experience is just like on a desktop browser. Very nice.

6) I have it in my pocket (inside a Nokia's official non-model-specific accessory sock) all the time, no problems. But of course mileage may vary.

1. Check out the downloads here @maemo.org, there is maemo select too but most of the apps are here.
2. I haven't scratched it yet in about half a week
3. Yes it's called zoutube, it works but not full screen ATM
4. hulu.com doesn't work well enough to use for me - does it work elsewhere?
6. I'm OK with it
7. Try squaretrade
