Anyone else notice screeching in the N900 speakers towards the high end? I'd hate to return this and have to wait another few months.

That depends? How bad is it? What kind of sound is it? Phone speakers in general usually tend to be problematic with the low and high ranges of sound (bass, and high pitch), so it might be a problem or you might be too sensitive..
Try looking at this

It's an n900 speaker test.. Might help you find out whether or not it's normal.

Listening to music beyond the middle sound level produces cracking in the speakers. Coming from the exceptional sound of the N85 and 5800, this does not sound normal.

Thats odd, i have noticed on full volume in the higher bands mine has crackled very slightly, but i'dd expect that. Definitley no issues on mine at the mid levels at all. :|

Yeah. Any chance this issue will just sort itself out?

What a shame. And I was beginning to really like it.

And above, I meant the 5800 was exceptional. The N85 is okay but still better than the N900 it seems.

Does kinda sound hardware'ish - but i'm sure someone more knowledgable may have a proper explanation. So hold out hope it could be a software bug possibley?

I think it's a defective left speaker. I guess it's going back.

How is that a solution?

Left speaker is defective (hardware). It cracks at midlevel. It's not like I'm playing Blur - Song 2 (although my 5800 handles that pretty well). The cracking occurs for all audio: ringtones, youtube, video, music, you name it, and just for the left speaker (cover up the left speaker and the right speaker performs like one would expect). I'm sure anyone who hears it would concur. Perhaps I should've been more forceful in my assertion but I was blinded by not wanting to return this phone.

Excluding that, I like it so far. Internet over wifi is outstanding, UI is a significant improvement over S60 5th, probably the best resistive screen to date, and build quality thankfully doesn't suck.

I'll probably play with it for the day and consider if its worth getting an exchange or a refund. Too bad as I think I'll miss out on the $50 rebate.

My speakers screeching when my phone is ringing. The same song in media player is playing well. Is this a bug?
