Hi gang,
I really want to get the n900 but we are currently with att and I can't complain about the service and my wife recently renewed her contract when she got her new phone.

I know the n900 doesn't support the 3g band for att. Would I still be able to use data with the n900? Primarily texting and email. I can use wifi at work and home for faster speeds.

I am against the iphone because of my hearing and having to have it in the perfect position for me to hear let alone the dropped calls with it. I had tried a 3g last year and I had it three days till I returned it.

I can always switch to tmo once our contracts get closer to ending. I am afraid that I will go and get the n900 only to have nokia release a new version supporting att 3g within 6 months.

If the n900 will work fine on att all be it slower then I will still go with it. The only other phone I was considering was the n97 mini but I don't think I will be happy with the symbian os.

Thanks in advance for any information.

You can use the N900 on at&t but you will be limited to edge speeds. Other members can attest to the speeds - ok for casual web browser, not okay for youtube or streaming music.

On the plus side you will have longer batter life from not using the 3G radio.

Yes, you will be able to receive calls, send texts, and listen to voice message on your new N900 without the ATT 3G capabilities. The only thing you will be missing is, obviously, 3G network-- which, as a matter of fact, is not available in most US locate. T-mobile currently equip my city with 3G. The only thing that changed was browsing on the net. So, go ahead and get the N900. I must warn you though that, not everyone that were so thrilled about the N900 have the same excitement when they receive the product. Hence, I suggest you thoroughly do your RESEARCH to ensure that this is the device you want.

I have been reading reviews and watching videos for the last two days and have pretty much exhausted myself and my eyeballs. LOL. The only thing that I haven't done is held on in person. I know there are some issues and there is a firmware release that may or may not fix most of them. I am fine with primarily landscape mode. I am not a big talker on the phone and have never used three way calling so that won't bother me.

I am a linux fanboy and have been running debian-testing for the last two years and this will only add to the love. I primarily use my phone for texting and facebook. I would also take more pics and videos but my current phone which is an incite with winmo is a piece of trash and it makes everything a pain in the butt to get accomplished quickly. I feel confident that the ovi store will rival apple's app store in due time. It is hard to pass on all the features that are built in to this phone, and yes they might not be supported with the current firmware but I feel confident that nokia will address them with future fw releases.

There are a few things that I wouldn't need like the voip but who knows I may eventually use it.

Im using AT&T. I turned of 3G immediately since its not available on this device on my network. Battery life is great. Edge surfing isn't the most fun, but its serviceable. I use mytube for watching youtube videos, as navigating the youtube website for me is painful over edge. MicroB needs a little work, but the device is stellar. In my case, 90% of the time Im in wifi coverage, so you may want to evaluate your potential useage before purchase. IRC, IM, and Email work quite fine over edge. And when I have to struggle through an incredibly latent RDP session for remove server management, its doable.

I'm also using my N900 on AT&T. Everything works fine. The edge speed is not as bad as I expected (after using N95 on 3G the last couple years). The only thing you'll miss (other than the speed and potential call quality improvement of 3G) is the ability to use voice and data at the same time. The only thing I really used 3G for on my N95 was SlingPlayer and the N900 doesn't have that anyway.

I plan on switching to T-Mobile since it's cheaper, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I ordered the n900 this morning and should have it tomorrow sometime. I don't think I have ever used data and voice at the same time so I don't think it will be a problem. I have wifi at the house and I am putting wifi at work and they are about the only places I am at 95% of the time. When we visit the relatives they all have wifi so I should be alright for when I want to browse. I can't see me doing too much browsing anyway since I am in front of a computer at work all day and at the house so I will mainly have to use it to try and find something quick if needed while out and about.

The things I like the most about the n900 is the fact it is linux and I like the interface of maemo. The fm transmitter and tv out are big pluses also.

We will probably switch to tmo in the near future because they are cheaper but I will have to go to one of their retailers in the nearby area so I can see if we are in a 3g area. According to their service map we should be but I have seen how that can be off.

We are right in att 3g area but reception at the house used to be half and half but they must have done something recently as we are now always good with full bars. I am hoping I will be lucky enough that the 2g here will provide sufficient enough speeds for me. I am like a kid at xmas waiting for it to show up tomorrow now LOL.

I would research online, and then try to order a "Standalone SIM Card" online. Its cheaper as you will be able to activate the $10 "web2go" plan. Otherwise, they'll try to put you on the $25/mo "Smartphone Data" plan.

I had asked a rep at my local kiosk about any "discounted" data plans (a la AT&T's $15 "MediaNet plan), and he looked at me like I was crazy. Went online and T-Mo has (2) $10/mo data plans.
