Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!
Here is a quick guide that will help you out importing iTunes playlists from your Mac to your N900. Hope it helps!
1) Create your iTunes playlists.
2) Download doubleTwist Sync, Play & Send software.
3) Install the application on your Mac and create an account so you can use it.
4) From doubleTwist go to Playlists - Playlist setup - Import iTunes Playlists (playlists will now appear on doubleTwist).
5) Connect your N900 to your Mac - Mass storage mode.
6) From doubleTwist go to Devices - Nokia N900.
7) Check Sync Music and choose the Selected Playlists option.
8) Now check the playlists you wish to send to your device and enjoy!
A new category will appear on your media player playlist section named: "Imported"(scroll down to find it) after syncing is complete.
Good luck!

Yeah, I also had the same issue when I synced the playlists to SD card of the device. Did you try a reboot?
Seems like a sync issue.
Try to re-sync and if that doesn't work then use Nokia Multimedia Transfer software.
The method is similar.
