ok so could someone please help me out with how to view my emails offline.

its a gmail account , i can view them offline on my iphone not my n900.

i will be very appreciative and maybe give you a thanks

maybe i am missing something very obvious.. because my device can only show headers or full messages when connected-- as i open inbox the load circle appears and then the headers come up(but i am sure it downloads all messages fully because no load circle happens when i click on the email)

if i am not online no message show

this is telling me it is not downloading the message and saving them to my device.. i cannot find a setting to change this- i automatically configured my gmail account

You should setup through POP3.
For this in modest press new Account.
Don't Choose Service Provider just press next...
enter mail, username (before @), password)
press next:
Account type POP3
incoming server: pop.gmail.com
Check Secure authentication
Secure Connection: SSL
next
Outgoing server : smtp.gmail.com
secure authentication : login
Secure connection: SSL

The default for modest is IMAP, the default for Gmail is POP. You either need to switch Gmail to IMAP or use the POP settings in Modest.

See this page (User experience with POP is not that great) IMAP preferable.

http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/0...ersus-pop.html

If you have very large inbox, there is bug in Modest that takes a long time to show the in box. In which case just use Nokia messaging and have your Gmails pushed to you.

ok i have a bit of a problem. with this way of doing things.. this doesnt happen on my iphone..

if i have viewed the message on another device first it wont download..

anyways of sorting this out so it acts like my iphone..

and views all even if viewed and picked up elsewhere,(seems a problem with pop3)

doesnt delete messages from my outlook if i delete on my nokia, and downloads em to my device so i can view offline..(prob with imap)

in my outlook i have save a copy in my account seetings.

i never use gmail web based..

its wierd because the iphone uses imap.. but it downloads the messages as well. not only that but if i delete of my phone it stays on my oulook..

which is the way i want to keep it.

what is the iphone doing that the n900 cannot

pop3 is sadly almost useless to me, as i cant download allready viewed mails..

but thanks for the help anyway

It is google implementation of POP3.
I had same problem and switch to IMAP on phone and POP on notebook.

Anyway You should check it on Gmail.com Go to settings and choose Forwarding and POP/IMAP
For POP exist 3 options:
1) Keep in Inbox
2) Archive
3) Delete
You should activate Keep in inbox

Second thing you can try it is select option:
"Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)"
but in this case be prepare to get a lot of ald mails from google.
Google has bad implementation of option: "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on". If you activate it you can download POP mails only ones.....
If you want you can fill bug for this on gmail. It is not phone bug
