Okay so maybe only I need this...for the n900....how hard would it be to code a program or a set of instructions that will auto-launch the phone app when it detects the phone changing from landscape to portrait mode...I know this may soumd pointless but I will attemp to defense my proposal.

When one turn their phone to portait mode, what is it for? Mostly it's to talk on the phone or browsing (if we ever get that feature). This feature would be useful. Whether you are browsing the web or listening to music or taking note, just turn your phone to portrait to activate the phone app.

Maybe instead of just launching the phone app, it could launch a dock of customized app to allow users to quick launch their app of choic instead of going through the menu to find your app.

Can someone implement this? Am I crazy? Comment?

This option is already available.

Activate the Phone app. Then, click the taskbar (or whatsitcalled - that thing right of the clock/batt indicator at the top of the screen) and in the menu, choose 'Turning Control'. Check the 'Launch by turning' box.

And that's it! Obviously Nokia doesn't think you're crazy

I'm sure Apple allready copyrighted shaking the device as a method of input

Kidding ofc, but they do keep claiming they own everything, don't they? Patenting multitouch? What's up with that!

I could have sworn that this feature was enabled by default. But, one of those which works very well in terms of a simple phone gesture making the mobile respond to context.

Thanks for pointing this out, I forgot about it.

Now, if someone wants to extend this towards doing something else, here are a few ideas:
- after user has turned the mobile, a connected bluetooth headset/audio device will beep for a voice command
- after user has turned the mobile, the status changes to show yellow for "busy" - since the assumption is that you are about to make a call

The downside of having turning control on is battery waste, as it keeps the accelerometer on all the time when display is on.
