mplayer in N900 would not play it. Is this a codec issue, or is it a video resolution/file size issue?

I have the Extra Decoders Support (ver 0.2-1) installed already.

The N900 does not play HD video, which is your 1280x720 file. Does do 800x480. AVC is not a problem.

Reducing the number of pixels to 800 worked.

I was hoping that the n900 can take the HD video as is and shrink it down when displaying onto the screen.

Do you think that support for HD will come with time? Is it hardware or software related?

Seems unlikely. I guess it's too much to ask of the cpu/dsp to deal with the data rates you get with HD resolutions. Just as raw data, that's 900K pixels per frame, 25 frames a second, say 3 bytes per pixel. In total: a lot! The task of reducing the resolution only adds to the work needed.
