Q: Where is the update? How can I get it?

There have been two updates this week. You need to install the first to get the second. The first is called PR1.0.1 (or maemo5 44-1 in your App Manager). This is an OTA "over-the-air" update, meaning you can install it directly on your N900 from the App Manager like you would other software updates.

Some important notes on updating:
  • If you use a "flasher" to do the update, such as one that works from your PC, you will lose your currently installed apps and need to reinstall them. More details
  • It's always a good idea to back up your essential data before a system update. A backup app is included on the N900 and is easy to use.
  • Always make sure your N900 has plenty of battery life. Running out of power during the update would be very bad.

Q: What is PR1.01 (maemo5 44-1 update in the App Manager)

Public Release 1.0.1 is a small update to the core parts of Maemo 5 so that the upcoming larger PR1.1 can be released:

Q: What else does PR1.0.1 have in it besides a fix to allow PR1.1 to install through App Manager?

Visible changes:
Icons in App Manager (switch to a default theme if you don't see them), Ovi store available

Q: It says I don't have enough memory, what do I do?

The main system partition (rootfs) of the N900 is very small due to hardware reasons. Installing applications from Extras-devel and Extras-testing can quickly fill it up (details). Some options to try are:
  1. Shutdown and then start your N900. This will clear some caches.
  2. Uninstall programs you installed from Extras-devel
  3. Disable and delete the Extras-devel repository in App Manager
  4. Uninstall programs you installed from Extras-testing.
Check the available space on rootfs after each step in X terminal.
Code:
df -h | grep rootfs
See the wiki page for a more complete discussion.

There is an alternative: you can use the Nokia updater to "flash" your N900 from the computer. This will remove all your installed apps and should only be considered as a last resort.

Warning: while PR1.0.1 only takes around 20 MB to install, the much larger PR1.1 takes much more.
"A word of warning: The next big update will require 45 megs of free space on the rootfs."

Q: What about my problem with X!? When will that be fixed?

Public Release 1.0.1 is to allow PR1.1 to be installed directly through App Manager. PR1.1 is out now!

Q: But will that really fix problem X?

It depends. The content of the PR is based on the work done on the Maemo platform before the testing begins on the release.
See the release information for details on what has been fixed. This is not the last update; if something was not fixed in this update, it may be in the next.
