I haven't seen that anyone else has had this problem.

When switching off the phone and then trying to restart, it doesn't seem to restart whether plugged into the charger or not. I've held down the power button for 20-30 seconds a few times to see if it's me not pressing it long enough. I never had this problem before the update.

Right now the battery is fully charged, and there is the same problem.

The only way I can get the phone to restart is by removing the battery and putting it back in. Something I don't really want to do too much as the back cover mechanism looks like a potential weak point long-term.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I re-iterate that this issue has only come up since yesterday's update. There were no problems with updating, and went smoothly. I backed up date before running the update.

Both before and after the firmware update, I have had a problem similar to yours. Mine will start from off just fine if it is off the charger, but if it is on the charger or if it has been taken off the charger in the last 30 seconds or so, then pushing the center top button doesn't result in the white LED coming on and subsequent attempts after that will fail until I pull the battery.

If I take it off the charger and let it sit for a minute or so, then I can start it normally.

Frankly I was hoping the new kernel in the update would have fixed this problem.

I've exactly the same issue jjd reports. But I had never the patience to wait a minute. So I removed the battery and put it back in, which also helps.

Did you have this issue before the firmware? Mine's only happened since the update.

I still have the old firmware and have the same problem.

My N810 and N800 both have the same characteristics, it seems to be some long standing issue in the charging firmware.

I had trouble with starting the N900 yesterday, almost a day after installing the maemo 5 update.

The behaviour was that I held down the power button (not connected to the charger for some hours), the NOKIA text would show, brightly lit, then the screen dimmed, then the white led would come on, then gradually fade away. I never saw the screen with the row of dots appear.

I'm not sure if I'd just let the battery run down too far for it to start, though, although I seem to remember having charged it recently enough before I had the problem.

After charging for a little while, then removing the battery and microSD card, and then putting the battery back in, it was able to boot.

Unsettling, but might be just down to my not having charged it (though in that case, why the brightly lit NOKIA screen?)

Anyway, for those people with this problem
  • Is this the same sequence of events?
  • What happens when you attempt to boot the device and it won't boot - do you see stuff on the screen, etc.?
  • Do you get the same problem while charging via the usb cable into a PC/laptop ?

Mine's different. There is no response, no LEDs, nothing on the screen, just a dead device. I've tried plugging in the charger and it won't charge either. I've tried this with a full battery and still the same thing. Only a battery pull seems to solve it.

Since today's firmware update, I've shut down after removing it from the plug and then shutting down. It seems to start up fine if I do that, but I will know as more time goes by.

It could be that the latest firmware has fixed these problems.

My N900 did not have this problem before the update, but it appeared during the update.

As the update downloaded and installed, I checked on it every couple of minutes. Sometime in between checks, the phone became completely unresponsive. I couldn't tell if it was actually off or not. Plugging it into the charger did not activate the notification led or cause the device to boot. The power button did not have any effect whether it was plugged in or not. After reading this thread, I realized that it had probably shutdown but been unable to restart. Pulling the battery solved the problem: the phone booted and completed installing the update.
I then shut down a second time to see if the problem was persistent. It wasn't- now the phone powers up normally.
So my phone briefly had symptoms identical to your own. I have no idea if the cause of my problem is similar to your own.
