worked for me. Note that you need to reboot the device before this is visible and note the exact name of the file adancau mentioned above.

yes.
What you need to do is comment out the menuitem pointed out above
How to do that?
insert "<!--" (without the quotes) on the line above the first line of that menuitem and insert "-->" (again without the quotes) below the closing tag of that menuitem. Then save the file and reboot

As I want to remove offline mode/online mode buttons
..and possibly phone button..
as when u install the very useful app "cellular modem control buttons" there are way to many buttons.. have tried modifying system.xml file with no luck
