I have been told that the whole "your device is not connected to a USB 2.0 capable port" is just something to be ignored, but I am really getting slow transfer rates - 23 minutes to copy a 1.2 GB file (DVD rip) - unless that is an acceptable rate? I wouldn't think so.

Is there anything I can do to correct this "non USB 2.0 port detected" problem? I mean, on the N900 end of things. I get good transfers from other things, like USB HDD's and SD card readers - I've never been warned or had throughput problems in the past.

Thanks for any help.

Ok, I've solved it. It was necessary to install the Nokia PC Suite (which is a really sloppy bit of kit, if you ask me).

On connecting with the suite, disconnecting, and reconnecting, Windoze went though a bit of song and dance with the task bar balloons, and then said everything was A-OK. And the 1.2GB file that I just transferred in about 20 minutes, I transferred again in under two minutes.

I'm surprised something like this doesn't get more talk around here. Unless everybody is installing the Nokia suite as a matter of course? I didn't even know where to get the suite - I had to Google for it - and I wasn't even looking for it, I was looking for USB2 drivers, but all I found of interest was the suite, so I decided to give it a try. Glad I did!

No, the problem is on your end. I never installed the PC suite and I get full USB 2.0 speeds to my N900.

Windows pops up that message when it detects a USB 2.0 device plugged into a USB 1.1 port, which means your drivers aren't set up properly or your port is screwed up in some way.

Ah, good catch. PC Suite installs the proper driver for USB connection to Nokia devcies. Sorry I forgot previously-- just used to having PC Suite installed.

I was randomly receiving that message, usually if I tried to access the device too soon after connecting it to the PC.

What is your OS? Mine is WinXP. Maybe you are on Win 7, or some OS with a more robust set of drivers, perhaps?

I have winXP.

I noticed if the N900 is on then plug into the winXP, everything works fine.

However, if the N900 is off, plug it in, the winXP will do the dance and singing and will also ends up with error mess "There is a problem with installation of the new hardware...."

And upon terminating from the USB, same issue. The winXP would recommend click "now it is safe to unplug USB...", but if I do that, N900 turned into an 'irritating mode', unpredictable, since then, I just unplug the USB without clicking the "it is now safe to..." message.

Vista. But I've plugged into XP and had no problem. With the N900 in Mass Storage mode you definitely don't need any to get full speed.

Well, I'd have to disagree with that last statement, from personal experience.

The XP box you plugged in to, did it have the Nokia suite installed? Also I'm wondering if any files are added to the N900 upon first connecting to a comp with a properly-installed set of USB2 drivers suited for the N900? Or is that too much of a stretch.

Anyway, my USB ports are ALL 2.0, and as I've said, I never had config problems in the past, been using the same ports since the day I got the PC and always ran full 2.0 speed except for the N900 without Nokia Suite.

Mine has done that about 25% of the time I plug it in, on various computers, Windows and Linux. If it connects as USB 1.1 just unplug and re-plug and it'll almost always negotiate as USB 2.0 the second time around. It hasn't happened to me yet in PR1.1 but I've only plugged in USB a couple times since upgrading.

Also, if you have a USB 1.0 device (like keyboard, mouse, printer) on the USB hub it could sometimes force all devices on that hub to go slow.
