Okay, you all are a lot more technical then I am but I just got my N900 two days ago and so far I have slept a total of 5 hours trying to decide what to do now! I did not realize that this did not have voice command, or voice dialing. I did not realize that just because everyone said open source that I wouldn't be able to add app's like Google maps and thought I would get Ovi maps with Nav for free like what is posted on the Nokia site!

I have a Nokia N95 and have waited forever to upgrade because nothing had as good of options. What is important to me is, 1. hands free voice dialing, commands, 3G speed, data speed, tethering, VoIP, WiFi, touch screen, size of display, qwerty keyboard, smart phone, camera with flash! I want an everything phone and now I find that the very very importance of voice nav and voice command/dialing are not here!

Money is a priority and so now I am asking anyone here, will these things come, I mean in a relatively short time???? If not what now, N97? or should I hold out. Something like the Samsung Impression looked good but no WiFi. I don't know what to do, sell on eBay, get the N97 or the Motorola Milestone??? I have AT&T, left T-mobile and will never go back.

Are you saying get a different phone? I have looked at every phone and nothing that I have seen does what I want. As far as if a salesperson fooled me I think that because I kept waiting for the right phone and nothing had "everything" I finally after reading more and more and seeing everything good about the N900, and wanting to stick with Nokia because my N95 was made so well and steps above all other phones out that I missed the part about not being able to do voice dialing! Really dumb on my part but patience isn't my strongest virtue and I didn't want to put my entire life, into Google's data base that I just said okay, here goes, and bang now I have it. Bought through Dell and a return they say can cost 15% restocking charge!

The trouble with looking for the perfect phone - like the perfect house, perfect outfit or perfect man is that there isn't one.

The trick, in my experience is to make a priorities list: 'Must haves' at the top, things you'd like but could live without next, then wants, then dreams. Rule out any device that doesn't have your 'Must Haves' first or you are in danger of picking a device with lots of dream features but missing one or two essentials. It sounds to me like that is what you have done.

To be honest, if MMS were your 'Must have' or a Bible, extra profiles - any number of things I'd say Hang On. But neither voice dialling nor voice GPS are on the horizon. I would honestly suggest you put it down to experience and send the device back. Good luck finding something that has enough of what you need.

Well I have definitely decided this won't work based on that but I would love it if someone told me of something they think might. Kathy thanks for your input and I totally agree with what you say. The problem I am having is that I have been looking and waiting for almost a year and I really want a solution. Do you think I would be happy with the N97?

I don't think you'll find something that does ALL of that.

Milestone is a pretty good device too...

I have a N900 but bought my wife a Nexus One. Her phone seems to have all the features the Nokia is missing (reasonable battery life, mms, snappy UI, turn by turn etc etc).

It had seemed the N900 was a better choice for me because I like to tinker with the device but I am starting to have some serious droid envy.

Watching her locate the nearest Starbucks faster than I could get the N900 maps application started was embarrasing. Then the Nexus gave voice directions to the coffee shop, something the N900 cannot do.

My kids thought it really funny that my "flagship" Nokia device lacked so much functionality.

The final problem .. the N900 refused to charge overnight even though the battery icon indicated it was charging. I had almost no battery the next day. Not amused.

I had first ordered the N900. Then Dell said 8 weeks to get it and then the Droid came out and I bought it on eBay, while waiting for it the Googlr Nexus one rumors started so I turned around and sold the Droid on eBay before I had gotten it in the mail. Then the Nexus One did not support 3G with AT&T and I was suprised and amazed at Googles poor choice of carriers. Have you looked at T-mobiles BBB report. I have had their service for 10 years and believe me it just gets worse. So I went on my dads AT&T plan and now I have good reception where there was none at all with T-mobile. So, now I am thinking either the N97 or the Motorola Milestone. I would maybe wait for the Motorola Backflip but it will be the size of the Cliq and have the same operating system and I don't think I want that. So, I think the Milestone!! What do you all think???

For you I guess any standard smartphone will do! N97 as you mentioned, was on my list on top before N900 came to my notice. I am searching for a good replacement for about a year now as you do... nothing met my "Must Have" yet apart of those. There is also a "Must Not Have" list in my mind.

GPS, WiFi, GSM, EDGE, UMTS, SIP, keyboard, resistive touchscreen, calendar, proper syncing
(yes no voice-nav, I look at a map before I start and most likely I find the place. yes no voice-dial, where I need it; it never worked - not with Nokia phones - not with Ericsson - not with SonyE)
