- default charger has an output of 1200mA

- I tried using the USB cable attached to an Energizer USB charger that plugs into AC (wall). This has an output of 500mA. Nothing happened.

- looking into a solar charger with output of 800mA and wondering if this could work.

AFAIK USB has 500mA so it should be enough

afaik, even 1ma should work theoretically. it would just take extremely long to fully charge.
i dont know if the n900 refuses charging when connected to a powersource that has an output below a specific mA-value, though.

Since the n900 needs to be running to charge, and draws more than 1 ma to run, a 1 ma charger would only slow down the discharging a little bit. It would not charge the n900.

As for 800mA "specifically", I'm using the OEM Motorola charger for my "Q", to charge my 900.

I have a cheap made in china solar charger which has a 800ma output.. it does not charge the N900... the output voltage however is higher than it should be for the N900

I assume as long as the voltage is correct it should work.

It also needs to short the data connections, otherwise the N900 won't charge.

My N900, with its 1.2A charger, takes much longer to charge than my N800 with its 1.0A charger. And the battery of the N900 is only 1320mAh. To me this indicates that the N900 doesn't charge with 1.2A, not even close. For all I know it charges just 500mA even with its own charger (it certainly takes time enough for that). An 800mA charger will probably charge it as fast as the original charger. But, as said above, its connector won't necessarily work out of the box.

The only matter is of the voltage differences,
Nokia N900 has 5V and 1320mA.
It can be fully charged if the volatage output of the adapter is equal to 5V, however if the charge output is less then it will take more time.
For example if with 1320mA it takes 2 hour, then with 500mA it will take (2*(1320/500))hrs=5.2hrs.

And as long as the concept of providing it more and more voltage for charging, it may be dangerous as it can burn out the circuits, can damage battery and device too if is more
