Hello everyone. On my old Jailbroken iPhone, there were several applications that allowed me to share my iPhone's 3G connection with other devices like a laptop.

It was platform independent and wireless, as it set my iphone into a "router mode" and any device that could use wifi could connect to its 3G network via simply logging onto the wireless access point created on the iPhone. One could leave it insecure, or put WEP or WAP keys on it like any access point.

http://www.junefabrics.com/iphone/index.php - PDANet is one such type of app for the iphone with the feature set I'm looking for.

I was wondering if the N900 might have a similar application that could make it into a wireless router of sorts? Free would be preferable, in both the "in speech" and "in beer" senses, but if that isn't possible, I'll understand.

Thanks!

I think that there are no apps for that right now. JoikuSpot will be able to do that, but you'll need to wait for it a little bit.

Ahh, okay. I'll keep my eyes open then. Its very nice to be able to instantly "spawn" a temporary wireless network and take advantage of 3G (or 2.5G, if necessary) . Is JoikuSpot a program you're working on? Will it be free when complete, and contain all protocols? I've seen quite a few that only "pretend" by acting like some sort of tunnel that limit applications significantly, for other platforms.

No i'm not a developer. JoikuSpot is already available for Symbian platform. They are now working on porting that app to Maemo. And yes, it'll be free. Atleast i think so. I had it on N95 8GB and it was free.

It should be easier on Maemo than other platforms.

You might be able to use the standard Linux networking commands to create an ad-hoc wifi network, NAT-ed to share the phone data connection. Anyone tried?

Of course it is a lot easier to just use bluetooth DUN.

I recommend starting from page 10, which starts with summary, and then reading on to see what's the situation so far.

More people testing are definitely welcome, but this is not yet for the faint of heart (you need to manually flash a custom kernel for example).

It's easy enough to use the N900 as a 3G modem via BT, by installing the Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking package. What I would like to do, in addition to that, is to connect my N900 to a wi-fi network then use the N900 as an internet access point, again via BT. This way I could
a) Use my BT-only Palm to network via wi-fi, through the N900
b) Use my N800 on sites where the wi-fi router supports WPS, which, for some reason, completely blocks the N800 from connecting whereas the N900 works fine (with the known workaround).
