first of all, i've had my N900 for 3 days and i'm having so much fun with it. it takes some getting used to cuz it's much different to a conventional mobile phone (without all the buttons and the keypad, my previous phone was a N95 8GB). it's truly a great device.

anyway, back to my question. it seems that after installing a bunch of applications last night (including some mscim*), i can't bring the special symbols table up anymore (i press the blue arrow and the Sym/Ctrl buttons together to bring up that table, right? i've only tried that once). i'm not sure if it's caused by the installing of the various applications.

is there anyway to solve it? or is a re-flash gonne be needed?

Have you tried uninstalling the applications?

yup. i uninstalled the suspicious ones (from the devel repository, namely mscim*), and it still didn't work.

i've re-flashed it already and it works now. i'm probably gonna find out which application caused the problem when i install the applications again.

Tracking down the problem to a certain package and then filing a bug report against it (use http://maemo.org/packages/ to find the bugtracker) is highly welcome so issues can be fixed.

It is because of mscim. This is a known bug. Check out the official dev page:

There is a temporary workaround though. If you uninstalled mscim the SYM key should work again..

thanks. it is indeed mscim that disabled Sym. but i still needed to re-flash after uninstalling it though.

someone said in your link that mscim-tables-symbol can be used as an alternative. does mscim-tables-symbol have the all important symbol for pipe (|)?

nokix, from what I have read, yes installing mscim-table-symbol does enable you to input the pipe '|' symbol. Note that I have not personally installed it.

i've installed the mscim* packages again and the pipe symbol is there. i've also followed the guide in the wiki to customize keybar for xterm so that the pipe symbol is readily available.

Sorry to hijack this track but I have a similar problem.

I tried uninstalling MSCIM and all the other related apps today so that I could use SYM and virtual keyboard again. However, after uninstalling and restarting, I still couldn't use the virtual keyboard or the SYM! When I open the settings, I can see the "MSCIM Input Method" appearing for a few seconds in the menu before disappearing.

I have tried reinstalling and uninstalling but still no luck.

Any ideas anyone? I would hope that I didn't have to reflash my unit!

Thanks!

sorry to disappoint you but you have to re-flash.

if you want to use symbols with mscim, install the mscim-tables-symbol package. and fyi, virtual keyboard, word completion, etc, don't work with mscim.
