Hi, I'm looking for some remote software to control my Media Center PC (HTPC) via my n770, does anyone have any recommendations.

I've tried VNC, but with no scaling it's difficult to navigate a 1080p resolution.
Media Streamer is nice, but i want to be able to do key commands (arrow up and down to navigate menus.) I'm using sage as my front end.

Windows media center is an add on to Professional.. professional has something that will help.. Remote Desktop Access. RDP (remote deskotp protocal) will create a session for you (not control your local desktop like vnc) at the resolution of the connecting device.. the program you want, and I don't know if this is avalible, though its really small if its not.. is rdesktop.

RealVNC has a $30 Personal Edition that includes "desktop scaling to a particular size, by a particular ratio, or dynamically to whatever size you choose."

Has anyone used this with an N800?

As I understand it, that is a "viewer" configured feature. The Server supports the ability, but the viewer configures (enables) it. So the VNCviewer would need to be modified to support this feature and the current version (0.6) does not support this feature.

Well, if this feature is anything like the ability to create virtual VNC servers on Linux, then the client doesn't need to do anything special. This, of course, would only work if the personal edition provides the ability to create a virtual VNC server using an alternate resolution (i.e., there would be two desktop-style logins, one on the regular desktop, and one into the virtual desktop).

Another option for the server is that it could do the downsizing at the server level and return a different width and height to the client than is actually running. Again, in this case, the VNC viewer doesn't have to do anything special--all the processing is handled at the server level.

A third implementation option would be to layer the VNC Server on top of a remote desktop server.

However, a glance at the personal server VNC viewer documentation indicates that the client configures the scaling ahead of time. This option, generally, provides clients with the most flexibility. This information may or may not be sent to the server. If it is sent to the server, then the server is probably the one that implements the scaling. If it is not sent to the server, then the client is probably the one that implements the scaling. As these are proprietary features of the RealVNC client, I don't think the protocol is documented, although it wouldn't be difficult to determine.

Of course, probably the best approach for Windows systems is to port rdesktop to maemo.

It is possible the UltraVNC supports the ability to be automatically scaled down. I haven't tried it, but at http://www.uvnc.com/install/configuration.html , there is an option for the default server scaling.

UltraVNC does have "Default server screen scale" option, but it is in whole fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, ...) only :-( That is basically useless because it makes the font too small to read. Maybe if it worked with 1/1.5, but that did not work for me.

Thanks
