A UI that looks good and has some nice effects is something that makes it more pleasurable to use a phone. (Yes, I count my N900 as a phone)

Look at the Sense UI that HTC has developed for their latest Android phones. I think it is actually very nice to use and IMO it makes the experience of using Android better.

Having used the 3rd party rom with Sense UI integrated on my brothers Nexus One (that I flashed for him) and then coming back to my N900, I felt like my phone was just missing that extra ingredient that makes it fun to use.

If you know of any alternative user interfaces that are in the works for N900 post the info here.

If you are working on a UI post here.

Let us know your thoughts and ideas about what would make the UI of N900 better and how we can achieve it.

I rather want a fast UI than a flashy UI - although I haven't tried an fast Android phone with the Sense UI(or well, my sister have a Tattoo phone from HTC but it's kinda slow).

EDIT: But a lighter GUI would be great in my book.

Agreed. Pretty shiny things are fun but i get tired of them pretty quickly. I'd much rather have a UI that is extremely quick with no lag or stuttering between screens.

that looks cool and fast. hopefully nokia will not only ship Qt 4.6 but also some cool looking UI with the next update(PR 1.2).

I agree that a quick UI would be great but perhaps with Qt it is possible to have both on the N900 hardware which is a good spec.

I hope so too but I don't think it is likely from Nokia because they are putting the framework in place and leaving the rest up to the community

Was wondering about this as well. A fully opengles accelerated shell layer to replace hildon and most of the osso apps, dialer, media player, contacts mmmm.

Or at least a modified port of the Meego shell over to Maemo.

Anyhow, if people can make it for Symbian, which is significantly less flexible then Maemo, people can make it for Maemo, the question largely being who has the patience and preseverence to do the job.

Shell coding (or even simple outer layer UI coding) is no easy job after all.

Sadly that won't be coming as that i only a QT demo (an old one too) you can try that out by installing QT4.6.2 then installing the demos...

im massively interested with the concept of a new UI. kinda tired with this one, think (aside from the bar along the top) that its pretty basic and there isnt a lot of polish on it. the demo one that is in the repos is really nice, i wish it would be done. i want to know:
is it possible for normal users to actually write an entire UI? or is it something that really could only be done by a nokia dev team?

ive had extremely limited C experience, and i know Qt is based on C++, hence id be of little help..but id be willing to do whatever i could to help someone should anyone out there actually want to have a go. really im tired of the way my n900 looks, and im sure we could make it look a hell of a lot snazzier...anyone with me?
