Leaving for Australia in a few days. Will be in and around Perth for 4 months and need advice on a mobile plan w/data. I don't think that our N900 is compatible with Telstra's Next-G network, which is probably the fastest. If that's true, what is the next best choice? I will certainly want to tether my phone as well. Advice? (Right now I'm on a payg 02 plan in the UK with a web bolt-on, which works just fine for me. In the US, I'm with T-Mobile.) Yes, I travel quite a bit, and this is the best piece of technology I've owned since my Tandy 100 and, later, my Newton!

You can use the Optus network (which Virgin and a few others use) I get 3.5G speeds on that.

How much data do you think you will need?

Optus works fine.

Turbo cap is the best in the way of data from them. The cap limit is not that great though.

More info than you could use in the whirlpool.net forums.
There is "three", Vodafone, Optus and Telstra 3G networks. Plus resellers such as Exetel, Virgin and TPG.
You can use telstra on 2100 but there is little reason to pay the extra for telstra if you don't use nextG or edge.
How much data and talk will you be using? Do you need data much outside the metro area?
You might find it hard to get a post-paid plan as a visitor.

Thanks to everyone who responded. What a great group. The Optus Data Blaster seems to be good (but quite pricey compared to UK or US standards) Guess I'll go that route unless someone comes up with another suggestion. BTW, does anyone have experience with using a local VOIP/SIP provider in Australia? That would also be good for me while I'm there.

Just checked Virgin (using Optus network, I think), and they have a killer plan. http://www.virginmobile.com.au/promo...ernet/prepaid/
Anyone have any experience with them?

I'm using mine on the 3 network. I pay $29 for my calls cap and an extra $20 for a gig a month. You can get 2g for $20 as well if you agree to a 12 month contract.

3 roams onto Telstras NextG though, so if you're in rural Aus you will have to use the Edge networks. But so far going between the city and the suburbs I haven't had any problems. My data speed is always on 3 or 3.5.

/ The prices are around the same as the Virgin prices (cheapest out there) but virgin charges an insane amount when you go over. 3 is a little more reasonable.

90c/min + flagfall! "Bugger that" as we say downunder.

Again, how much talk and data do you want per month? It makes a big difference to which plan is best.
