I know this has been discussed many times, but i'm quite confused right now how to set up sync.

This is what i want: sync contacts and several calendars (mail would be great but not a must). I use Ubuntu so ActiveSync is not an option. At the moment i use Thunderbird and Sunbird, but i would switch e.g. to Evolution if necessary.

Which way is the less complicated one to get the sync:
- sync via google calendar (several calendar-sync possible?)
- sync via own Funambol server and Syncevolution

Are there other better ways to get the sync done?

I've used erminig with greate success. The downside however is that it doesn't support scheduling.
I want my contacts synced from the N900 to evolution. I use Google Calendar for the calendar and that's good enough (in terms of UI). But having contacts synced automatically two-three times a day seems to be (too) hard.

I made an attempt to schedule this myself, but the python bindings for the scheduling framework wasn't documented enough for me to success.

I'm looking at ScheduleWorld right now, paying 27 USD to avoid having to setup a Funambol server on my own (which I've read doesn't work as well as ScheduleWorld).

my setup currently is:
evolution on desktop
syncevolution on desktop
account on mobical.net (a free syncml service)
syncevolution on N900
built-in syncml on my symbian phone

i sync one-way from the desktop to mobical.net and then transfer to both the n900 and my symbian phone. works very well.

i used to have the same setup with scheduleworld instead of mobical before, but i had technical problems with syncing contacts there, couldn't access their heavy and clumsy web interface and really didn't understand why i should pay for it when it caused such headache.

I'm also waiting for Thunderbird/Lightning syncing. My setup is:

1) Outlook at work - Where I do all my "fine tuning"
2) N900 - Syncs GREAT with MfE
3) Thunderbird/Lightning at home - currently empty :-(

At one time I used Outlook>Google>Thunderbird, but that was too cumbersome....

I use Funambol (I run a local server) and syncevolution. It worked great for me before I updated to TB3. The Funambol mozilla plugin for TB3 is still under development and a bit buggy, but I use Linux, the windows version is more developed I think.

Have a read here for more detailed instructions on how to set this up:

If you've never done this before, it can look like a daunting task, but it's not as hard as it sounds.
Also make absolutely sure that you have a good back up of all your data :-)

Good luck

I'm using Evolution with Exchange backend at work on Linux x86_64.

As Nokia PC Suite running inside WinXP over VMware Player has troubles to detect/connect my N900, I'm looking for a way to sync and backup my N900 from Linux directly without bluetooth (no device on my workstation)

Do you know any sync option over USB available on Linux ?
Thank you in advance
